XP with SP1 will also work. I had it on an old AMD k6-2 500 with 128mb ram which worked fine.
Stay away from sp2 like the plague, it more than doubled xp min ram requirements for a low end system.

My advice was genuine and in my opinion is the best course of action for a 500 MHZ processor, 128 MB of RAM and a 5 gig hard drive.
That's why I suggested a new laptop,I know if it was my wife she would get a nice new laptop which will be a lot faster then her old one plus a new OS preinstalled .

Now if it was my mother-in-law she would probably get ME installed .

LoL!

My mother-in-law bought a fancy new lappy - Vista Home with 512MB RAM. OMG, was it s-l-o-w!!! I guess Best Buy doesn't like old bags any more than you do...

I bought her 2GB RAM for her Christmas present - no kidding!

It's kind of ironic that this thread involves wives... and male fantasies...

I was telling my wife I wanted to buy a netbook last weekend. She didn't even know what that was, so I explained it to her. On Monday, she said she thinks I should buy one, so she can have my 'old' lappy - you know - my 'old' x64 multimedia lappy with 4GB RAM, 4GB ReadyBoost, DVD burner, 320GB 7200RPM Travelstar with Vista HP SP2 beta and openSUSE 11.1 KDE 4 dual-booted on it.

I told her, "Yeah, nice try! Where's my breakfast?"

Heh! She wants it so she can leave it on the island in the kitchen, put her recipes on it, and do email while cooking, without having to walk back n' forth to the 'computer room'.

Really, how much of a computer does the average wife need? And, I don't mean that in a condescending way! Just being realistic! Mostly, wives just want something that works - that's all - and husbands are always goofing around with their machines, trying to impress them with how much they know...

You know what my wife did tonight?!??!? She used Excel to make an office pool. One of her co-workers is having a baby, and they wanna place bets on the delivery date, and how much it weighs. Hello?!?!? She needs a fast lappy for that???

I told her she can use my netbook, if and when I get one... maybe...

Truth! Women are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves! All they need you for is a sperm donor, so they can have kids, and some financial security in their old age. They could care less about having a fast lappy - that's just an insecure white male fantasy!

Another suggestion:

Is a laptop necessary in this case?

Refurbished desktops, or even Dell "refurbs", can sometimes be had in the $200 range, complete with XP or Vista, plenty of memory, and a decent hard drive. Of course you'd need a monitor, but in the smaller sizes (still bigger than a laptop's monitor), those are often available for the taking nowadays.

Just for the kitchen, I would get her a 10" netbook. Works well just for emailing, web browsing.

This or Win XP, winxp will be a little slow, but its another choose

With that amount of memory, I wouldn't use XP. XP isn't really useable on 128mb, 192mb I would imagine is fairly rough. I remember 2000 being horrible on 64mb and kind of crappy on 128mb. It would probably just be "crappy" with 192mb . If you kept the install clean it probably wouldn't be too awful.
