Then explain how front license plates have been required for many, many years before red light cameras and there are states with redlight cameras who don't require front tags?

They're required so they have an easier time hitting you with the LIDAR gun.

Whoa, so the laser gun is helped a lot by the prismatic granules in the paint? That explains how laser works so well.

Here in MA, 2 plates are required, but those of us with "green" plates are exempt from the law as we only have one plate, since that's how they were issued at the time. Not sure when the 2 plate law took effect, but those of us with green plates take a distinct pleasure in hanging onto them as long as possible (I've had mine since 1989).

I live in Ohio and have worked all over Ohio (Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, Dayton...et all) I have never been stopped by a cop for not having a front license plate.......even when I got stopped for speeding violations (like 2-3 times in the past 6 years) I was never questioned about a front license plate......so I am assuming it's OK in here ...Which is awesome

I live in CA and when i had my civic, I'd constantly get pulled over for no front license plate with me going under the speed limit. CONSTANTLY. So I put it back on. Same for my front tint to. I think it mainly had to do with the fact that I drove a black lowered civic. I bet if I had a 5 series or some other luxury brand no one would do shit.

I tried taking it off once - my Rodeo looked completely strange so I threw it right back on.

My X has a holder for it on the front so taking it off would be worse.

My wife moved here from MI 2 years ago and her car doesn't have a front license plate holder (2002 Mercury Cougar)

She has been driving here the whole time without it, hasn't been a problem yet.

(Of course now after this post she will get nailed tomorrow for not having it.)

yep. I got a $54 ticket for it once. Got it in a town I pass thru to get to work. The same cop sits in the same spot every morning during rush hour, and after that initial ticket, he'd look at my car passing by every day to make sure I have my license plate on.

Flip him off every time you go by.

They are required in Ohio. My brother was pulled over recently for this, but they just gave him a warning. I live in the Cincinnati area and we have so many cars from Kentucky, which only has one plate, so they rarely even look. In general, if you are close to the state boarder and your neighbors don't have front ones, it might be easier to get away with it.

BTW, I'm moving to Atlanta this week. Do they have one or two plates?

My state doesn't require them (or even issue them). We also don't have annual smog/vehicle safety & appearance inspections. Horray for smaller gubberment!

When a car comes towards a cop with no front plate, they have to check the rear of the car if they really want to bust anyone since some states don't require front plates. Probably why so many people can get away without them because the cops don't bother double-checking the rear of the car. I know someone who hasn't had a front plate on his family's minivan for years, never put it on and he doesn't even know where it is, but never gotten pulled over. The holder is there though and still has a small shred of the dealer's paper ad on it.

According to the law, "all license plates are required to be displayed horizontally and in an upright position with the identifying numbers and letters facing outward from the vehicle."

So technically I can't have it in the window unless I somehow prop it up to be upright. On the other hand, it probably wouldn't make much of a difference exactly how the front plate is display if it's in the window, whether I prop it up or not.

They are not required in Georgia. I see a lot of people with customized front plates that they add anyway though. Usually some airbrushed crap.

In CA it was a "fix it" ticket. I got it in LAX, and the cop went on to give me a totally pathetic story about how in "post 9/11 world we all need to be alert."
Ticket was cheaper than getting the holder for it, so I never put it on, just got a new set of plates and the ticket signed off.

My mom got a ticket after nearly two years of having WV tags, she gets Texas tags and is pulled over after a week for no front plate. Her car has an aftermarket front nose/bodykit and there is nowhere to put the plate, and even if she did somehow McGuyver the plate bracket into the nose, it would block airflow into the radiator.

Not here in CA. Didn't fly with me.

Had my car shipped from MI to HI for the year I was there. It didn't have a front bracket since it was a MI car (no front plate needed) and I just had it in the windshield because I had seen other cars around doing that. I got a $70 ticket for it IIRC but wasnt pulled over for it. I had entered a city parking lot the wrong way with a cop camping in it.

The next day I drilled a hole in the front bumper and bolted it on in hopes of getting the fine dropped but they didn't, most likely because I tried fighting the other ticket.

I'm in Ohio and have been driving for 20 years but got pulled over for it once. It was a university campus officer who seemed bored, I think I just got a warning. I have had a number of wrecks/citations but never got ticketed for a missing front tag.

Heh, that's pretty stupid.

All new cars in the US meet strict pollution requirements (stricter than the UK too) and strict safety requirements. It doesn't make sense for the state to re-test them every year.
