front USB causes problems

when i plug in anything to my front USB ports that draws power from it my computer freezes....ive had this problem with jump drives and ipods...my digital camera and palm pilot DO NOT freeze my computer

this is shameful, but its probably necessary....
system specs:
dell 2400 mobo
celeron 2.4GHz
256MB PC2100 or 2700 (not 100% sure)
WD 40GB IDE HD
Maxtor 120GB IDE HD
nVidia 5200 pci graphics card
350W aspire power supply
note: i upgraded my case first which is why im using an aspire power supply, and i will be getting a new mobo and cpu within two or three weeks, but this still annoys me

i have to switch off my power supply to restart, everything freezes

Maybe your motherboard doesn't support powering the usb devices or just gives less curent.
Check in Device Manager in USB Root Hub under Power, for how much mA can support and then the requirements of your devices.
Just a thought.

heh, i havent tried...i should....but my usb floppy drive works and thats plugged into the back....i know my motherboard supports powered devices because they work with the factroy installed front usb ports

Ugh. Dell motherboard in a non-Dell case is just asking for trouble.

Try to find the pinouts for the front USB - you've probably got them miswired.

I haven't verify it again, but my friend 2.5 hd in a usb case wouldn't get detected by windows if i plug it on usb backplate that is connected to motherboard usb pin header (it worked fine for other "low current" such as device, mice, flash drives, etc). But if i plug it on the rear atx i/o connector, it works fine. It seems to me that usb header on the mobo doesn't supply as much power as the atx usb i/o. seems a similar problems to you. btw my mobo is shuttle ak35gtr with via kt266a chipset, and 8235 i/o (usb 1.1)

my sister bought a cheap case when i built her comp and i recently bought her a flash drive for school. i tested it and all before i gave it to her on my rig and it worked fine. well she puts it in her front usb and no go, i get it back and it wont work at all. then the same thing happened on the new flash drive after i returned the broken one. ive decided im goina try to convince her to use this antec 2650 i have instead.

I had a simular problem. When I plugged anything into my front USB ports my computer would restart. Turns out something happend with the drivers and they weren't loaded anymore. When I went into the device manager there was a "?" by the USB devices. I just reinstalled the drvers and everything was fine. Give that a try if you haven't already.

I was having a similar problem, fairly sure it's a power issue. Everything was hooked up right, but the comp would restart if I plugged somethin into the front ports that needed power. The motherboard has 2 sets of internal headers, 4/5 and 6/7. I simply took one of the usb ports off 4/5 and put it on 6/7. This seems to have "fixed" the problem. A new power supply may also help if it's that the header isn't getting enough current on the +5v line. That wouldn't really make sense for only the front ports having the problem, but it wouldn't hurt.

FYI - the Via 8235 southbridge supports USB 2.0, not just 1.1. I have a KT400/8235 mobo here, and it runs USB2.0 reasonably well. You probably just need to upgrade your drivers. (Or did you mean an 8233 SB instead?)
