Front usb ports

I just bought an usb scanner and I wanted to plug it in and try it out real quick. So I plug in the power and plug the usb into my front usb port. Well xp pops up in the tray and says unrecognizable usb device. So I pull my box out and plug it into the back ports and it has no problems. The funny thing is that I have usb pen drives that work in the front ports no problems what so ever. Heck I just unplugged my usb mouse and tried it in the front ports and it worked without problems.

Anyone have any ideas why this happens?

My first thought was I hooked up the connectors to my motherboard wrong. Then I realized that I had been using the pen drives in there with no problems.

Ideas???

Well I haven't checked per se. When I plugged it into the back port I didn't know which ports were the usb 2.0. So I plugged it into the free port and up poped a message that I have plugged in a usb 2.0 into a 1.1 port. It also said it would work but wouldn't be as fast. Plus the scanner software picked up the scanner in the 1.1 port.

What I am getting at here is if that was the problem it would have said it in a message.

I have seen a similar UNSOLVED front panel problem before, and mysteries drive me nuts.

At first I was guessing it was a USB1 vs USB2 issue. However, A7N8X specs on the Asus website say that all of your USB ports (including the front panel mobo header) are USB2, so how is Windows seeing a USB2 device plugged into a USB1 port?? Weird stuff going on here.

Helpmeout, I am not sure what you mean about the power issue. All of the usb connections are on the Motherboard.

Pundit. I just upgraded about a month ago. I don't think anything new has come out since then.

emjem, That is incorrect. There are 2 usb ports on the rear that are 1.1. All of the rest are 2.0. I have the deluxe model that might be the difference in what you saw on Asus's site.

The Deluxe model also shows ALL USB2. I guess Asus has it wrong on their site. Asus

Well, there has to be something different between the front and rear connectors. If they are both running from the same controller on the chipset they ought to behave the same.

Some mobo manufacturers put an extra USB controller on the mobo to provide for more connectors. But nVidia's chipset provides for 6 USB ports and I take it from the Asus web site that you have 6 ports. Do you have more than 6 usb ports? Or is it possible that Asus added a seperate USB controller to the mobo for some reason?

The Asus A7N8X-Deluxe's internal header should be USB 2.0, as well as all four of its rear ports. However, if your case's wiring isn't USB 2.0-compliant, then it may force USB 1.1 operation, which might work fine for some devices but not for others. What case is this we're talking about?

The ASUS bios also has a setting that allows you to disable the USB 2.0 functionality. I'm guessing that was set for the ports that are only running at 1.1 mode.

Not that this has anything to do with the strange problem, the thread was started to solve.

Well to be honest I didn't look in the manual. I remember reading either here in the motherboard forum or amdmb forums that one set of the rear usb ports were 1.1. I saw it when I was doing research on which motherboard I was going to buy for my upgrade. I guess I will have to do a little searching to find it.

Anyhow to answer the questions. there are 2 groups of 2 usb ports on the rear. The top set near the keyboard and mouse ports is the usb 2.0. The lower set near the audio jacks is the 1.1. I just checked the manual in the bios section so I didn't have to reboot. In the options for usb controllers is "disabled", "v1.1", and "v1.1+2.0". There is no option for just 2.0. according to my manual. I will have to reboot to confirm this. I knew I read it somewhere.

Back to the topic. When I plugged the scanner into the 1.1 ports it said it would work but the speed would be slower. When I plugged it into the front it said unrecognized device. The front ports are supposed to be usb 2.0. Weird.

Also to go along with what mechbecon said. My jump drive is only a 1.1 version. You would think that I would just get the same message as what I got in the 1.1 in the rear.

Well off to do a reboot.

Edit\ I only had the three choices in the bios as stated above. Now if I can just find where I saw that info posted.

Well I have been doing some research and it seems that my front ports that came with my case are only 1.1. But you would think that it would just give me the message that a v2 dveice has been plugged into v1.1 port.

emjem I have been doing some searching and it seems that my a$$ sucks canal water. I must not have the drivers installed properly for usb 2.0. Or here is a thought, maybe since the front connector is only 1.1 it is dragging one set on the back down to 1.1 also. Thoughts? Maybe I was getting the 2 lan connectors confused with usb. One is nvida and the other is 3 com. Could happen.

Still doesn't explain why the rear will recognize the scanner and the front won't.

You didn't answer mechBgon on what brand case you are using. Insufficient cable between the front panel and mobo is the only thing that makes much sense to me so far.

EVERCASE E4252-AB

I was just reading at nforcershq that usb 2.0 compliant is a round cable. My case has a ribbon cable. I just tried updating my drivers and it seemed to find newer drivers. upon reboot none of my 3 root hubs say 2.0 in the device manager. So I tried to plug in the scanner again. The front still says unrecognized device however all of the rear recognized it without any message of 2.0 device plugged into 1.1 port.

So I am wondering if the message of 2.0 device plugged into 1.1 port only flashes once and my 2.0 drivers aren't installed or reinstalling the drivers fixed the one on the rear so it is 2.0. Now I am really confused.

Thanks for the help folks.
