Well, last year it started big with Pinkberry and Red Mango. Pinkberry was around a little earlier but when I first had tart it wasn't a craze or anything. I think the thing really exploded when Yogurtland became popular in Irvine.

Anyway, I'm not from SoCal, so I'll speak about my experience. The last 2 semesters, 2 froyo stores opened in Berkeley, and it became the new Asian place to go to. So I noticed no Asians went to our traditional yogurt places anymore, and they opted for sour yogurt tart.

Forward a couple months, and the revolution explodes in the south bay. I came home one weekend to Cupertino (my hometown populated by 45% Asians), and the new Yogurtland there was crowded with fobs ans ABCs. To my surprise, I saw at least 2 - 3 people wearing our football shirt, and a few other students. Now there's three froyo places in my town and just driving down another heavily Asian populated town (Milpitas) allowed me to discover yet another place which had a fat grand opening sign.

The trend with the froyo places here I've noticed is that it started with single flavors or maybe 2 at most like with Pinkberry. However, when these places sprouted up in the last 3 months around my neighborhood, they're all self serve bars where you pay by the ounce and throw on a bajillion toppings and not to mention they have like 10 different yogurt flavors.

So has anyone been sucked into this? Because it seems like the new place for me and my friends to hang out after work because the boba cafes are honestly just too crowded with damn high school kids.

cupertino...my hometown...I love that place...lived there for 7 years...my highschool and early college years.
milpitas...lived there for 2 years...wasn't bad just hated the cops as they like to pull you over for every little thing.

so almost a year later i figure the number of froyo places has at least doubled. How is it in your town now? Has this trend penetrated into the east coast?

Frozen yogurt is awesome. Anyone who doesn't like it is a communist. Why do you hate freedom?

There are a bunch of Pinkberry's in NYC. It's okay, but not worth travelling all the way to the city for me. NJ has better stuff, Yolato at Edgewater or Yum Yum in Cliffside Park, etc. Huge amount of east asians here in NJ, and they know about good eats.
