Bay Area has the Sempron 2200+ (OEM) w/mobo for $49.99 instead of the 2400+ and the A64 3000+ (retail) combo is $229.99 instead of $249.99.

Everytime I goto OC/LA Fry's, the mobo's are jacked up returned mobos. Does anyone have luck w/ getting a NEW mobo?

All you have to do is ask for a new board and they'll grab one from the shelf. My local Fry's usually pulls down a big stack on the morning of the sales.

you can get Athlon XP 2500+ and a good mobo for $140 online, which would be much better since you could overclock it to 3500+ level at least.

Did anyone have luck getting a different mobo than the one advertised in the cpu+mobo deals ? I think the P4 2.4 deal is decent, but would prefer a different mobo for a small increase in price.

Are they not gonna have any more Athlon XP+ cheap combo deals? I'd rather not have a neutered sempron.

How is the Sempron 2800+ compared to P4's performance wise?

Might pick up a combo today.

Absolutely no chance.

Yeah, I tried a few times at the Chicago Fry's with nothing resembling luck.

I picked up the AMD Sempron 2400+ proc with MOBO = $59.99, and the mobo looks new. You can't beat the price with the chip alone retailing for $65. The ECS has everything I'll need on it, and now they have a sticker on the box talking about OC'ing, whether I believe that is yet to be determined.

uhhhh, I dunno what magical land you live in, but the majority of XP 2500+'s don't hit past 2.2 GHz.

That being said, the XP chips are definitely superior to the semprons in terms of price/performance ratio and overclocking capabilities which seem to be almost non-existant for the new budget chips. But for a budget rig, these combos rock!

untrue, if you use a good cooler and up the voltage, you can get to 2.5 GHz (that's actually the average)

Normal/desktop Barton XP2500+ will only hit 2.2~2.3ghz while the mobile version 2500+ will hit an avg of 2.4~2.5ghz, when you hear someone hitting 2.5ghz with an xp2500+ in all likelyhood it is a mobile or some extreme cooling as the normal 2500+ does seem to wall at 2.2~2.3ghz on high end air cooling.

It would be convenient if you also posted the product# from the ad since most of these(other than cpu/mobo combos) are available to anyone via outpost.com

For instance the 250GB hdd is HERE online for the same price as in-store.

Well, personally I ONLY shop at the City of Industry Fry's in California, and I *always* get New In Box items, never used ones. Not that I don't SEE used occasionally, but in most cases there are PLENTY of new ones

This is true, as Fry's motherboard/CPU combo price is referenced/linked to a particular pair of SKU numbers (one each for the board and CPU)--or perhaps a single SKU for both--in their system...so even if you could substitute a different board or CPU, when the SKU for it gets scanned along with the SKU for the non-substituted item in the deal, the register won't be able to apply the combo pricing.

SAme here. I love the righteous indignation people have towards Fry's when in fact 99.9% of the "open box" stuff is from assholes who return it after "testing it out".

ok, I guess you're probably right about that. btw, is the 35W version of XP-mobile more likely to reach higher speed ?
