I am running XP on an overclocked 566(850) celeron and it runs perfectly fine. No reason for it not to run on the 1.6 Duron....

SVC.com Last week they (SVC GC68 HS&F) were going for $1.99 each. I bought at $3.99 each earlier. Now... $4.99 each.

Just as a warning, dont get the fan they come with, get an uprgaded one, i had one of these with the stock fan and i could hear it across my former apartment with 3 doors closed between me and it.

Not my experience. I removed the stock fan and installed a Cooler Master blue LED fan and swapped back due to the noise.

Well I can tell you that the Houston, TX Fry's still have several of these combos left cause the salepeople are using scare tactics to get customers to buy the more expensive combos. They said that the combo wont even run WinXP much less play any lastest games. Well I didnt believe them and I bought it anyway. I just started to build the PC together and the scare tactics are started wear my confidence down. I just would like to know if there any shread of truth to this or it just all bullhockeys?

No shiat, I bought 2 of these today at the Houston Fry's (had a friend with me) and the sales-droid kept asking us why we wanted such a slow-ass combo. Idiot.

Except that the motherboard you are using for your celeron is completely different than this one. Different socket, different chipsets, not even remotely the same except maybe the same brand. I'm installing Win XP on mine right now and so far no problems!

Picked up two of these combos this weekend - turns out I only need one. I'll sell the combo for $70 shipped non-cc PayPal, send me a PM if interested.

Can always just call Fry's and order it direct from them. Though recently they've been a bitch on selling some advertised items.

I had assumed that I could only overclock this combo by upping the fsb from 133 to 166 using the jumper. How did you fine tune to 1932?

In the BIOS you can adjust the FSB by 1MHz increments.

Did you try to do a voltage socket mod? Probably allow you to hit an even 166/2GHz if you did.

Don't know how. I'd like to try it as I'm told I'll have better stability with the pci/agp buses.

Thanks for the input on the fan. Anyone know of a good deal for the Panaflo fans or is $6.99 for the FBA08A12L the best one can do?

Should I keep week 39 or week 44 if I'm not looking to overclock? Thought of ocing, but opted for more stability, less heat--slower fan--less noise.

I got on of these at the Fremont Fry's for $49 for my very first system build. I see it's $39(I think) In the Seattle paper this week.

Just a word of caution. Inside the K7VTA3 manual, is an added slip of paper that says, "When the system runs at 333MHz CPU FSB, the memory will be automatically set to DDR333 regardless of the type of memory module(DDR400/DDR333)

We do not recommend that you use DDR266 memory module, this is to avoid system instablity"

As this is my first build I'm not at all sure what this means but I'm still gonna try the DDR266 they sold me...

It means that if you set your motherboard FSB to 166mhz (overclock), it is also going to run your RAM at DDR333mhz (pc2700). so make sure you get pc2700 RAM if you plan on overclocking. But if you don't plan on oc'ing DDR266 is fine.

It usually does, at conservative timings. Big risk though unless you test it thoroughly.

Socket/pin voltage mod @ ocinside.de

Would you happen to know the default voltage for the 2000+ Thorton? I think a little boost in voltage may make it run with a 166fsb. I'll try your Socket/pin mod.

Is this combo available in the Bay area? I might have my folks, who live there, pick this up for me. I still hate Indiana...
