i heard that they fixed the warranty issue a few months back. and it was a seagate issue, not fry's fault.

I'm setup for ATA ide hard drives. Do I need a new controller card, or a new motherboard to run SATA? Or is it smart to use adapters??

Not really. I generally don't keep a drive 5 years, and either way -- I value silence over warranty.

3 years has always been more than enough for me.

these seagates are rather noisy, especially when writing. if you want a quiet drive, check out the equivalent western digital. i swapped out my seagate for a western digital for my home media center pc.

So the .10 version is perpendicular tech, and the .9 is not. While I guess its cool to have the .10 technology, is there any "real world" advantage to have the perpendicular version versus the .9 version?

No, you can't do that. Just refuse delivery of the package. If it is left on the porch, don't open it and take it to the carrier's office to return.
