Saw this today in LAtimes as well as Orange county paper. Of course this happens after I already spent 60 bucks for last week's combo when my Asus board went bad.

Damn them! I need two new motherboard\CPUs for my servers, and these would do fine. We really need to set up a Fry's exchange system.

Or does someone know for sure that they'll take a shipping order over the phone?

Anyone know what version this ECS K7VTA3 is? ECS seems to have made 6 versions of this motherboard, each with a different set of features. Not that I am complaining as you are buying the CPU and getting the MBfor free (or vice-versa) but I wondered about USB 2.0 (which version 2.X doesn't have).

ECS link to K7VTA3 MB options

Last I knew at least one Frys would take orders over the phone but shipping was expensive enough to temper alot of the deals ($15 or so last I checked). It's been awhile though, so would be happy to hear things have changed...

This board they are selling should be the rev 8.0 which does have usb 2.0. It works fine. Had a few issues with my ATI AIW 8500DV last week but now it works good. It has been on for 24 hours a day since last Friday. I might have done something wrong with the front usb ports because I fried my Sandisk mini cruiser and sony memory stick reader.
Incidentally, San Diego has this board for $39.99 with a Duron 1.8ghz. Sucks because I just bought it last week for 54.99 with an XP2000 (which I just threw on ebay). I only needed the board.

The newer stock of boards Fry's been getting have been a mixture of the v6 and 8 boards. Can't really tell as the box desc itself says you'll either get a V6 or V8 board.

The only difference between the two is that the V6 uses the KT333CE chipset while the V8 uses the KT333CF chipset. The CF basically is a nerfed KT400 without the AGP8X support. Performance wise, the CF might perform a tad better but it's probably not even noticable to the eye.

Awesome deal...talk about being able to build a budget system...I think I might do this and just throw my XP1700 in it so that I can use the 8x AGP for my new TI4600 vid card.

Wow, this is just nuts. Although not ideal for hardcore gamers, this $35 setup probably meets or exceeds the true needs of 98% of all PC users out there.

Who would have thought that we could get this much computational power for $35. Just amazing.

Now the rant.

I WANT MY FRYS! Why oh why do we not have a frys in the Twin Cities!

Doesn't seem to be in Bay Area, they do have an Abit AV-10 and XP2200+ for $70 though (nicer than an ECS board).

Shame that, it would make a lovely upgrade for my Linux server.....

I just came back from the Fry's in Austin and they also have it with a 1.8GHz Duron for $39.99.

I've only seen K7VTA3 v8.0c boards (aside from a few returned old boxes, probably RMAs from ECS) for the last 3-4 months at my local Fry's. The boards I saw this this morning were 99%+ brand new 8.0c revision.

I got a MIUHB 0403 (fresh!) Duron 1.6GHz this morning. TbredB core goodness, but with only 64KB L2 enabled. The CPUs alone were on clearance for $34.90, so it's like getting a motherboard for $1.09 extra. I'm surprised that these are on clearance since the date code is so recent.

The one I got was a version 6 and it was brand new, not a return like 90% of the motherboards you see at Fry's. Actually, I pulled it directly out from a shipping box full of brand new boards. A version 8 would have been nice, but I guess I can't really complain for $39.99.

Good Lord.
If this trend continues, there'll be stacks of cpu/mobo's sitting next to the AOL disks you see on your way out of the grocery store.

Dad's b'day coming up, and he still uses a cyrix 133... so it'd be quite an upgrade for cheap.

I'd be happy if there was one within 2 hours... it's more like 2 days drive.
Why can't Fry's have an online store too?!

Well, that might be your problem then. If you have a Fry's with "90% returned" boards (which strangely you imply that *I* see, when I just said 99% were brand new) and such old stock that hasn't even been manufactured in 6 months (v6), you have a crummy Fry's. I'm glad I don't live near you.

Funny you say that... Just like AOL disks that I used to have stacks of, now I have stacks of these boards. Ranging from the V5 to V8. Not to say that they're bad... If you're looking for a basic no-frills board, this is the board to get. Supports basic FSB OCing to say the least.
