Fry's CPU/Mobo Combo - E2220 & ECS 945GCT-M/1333

I know the mobo probably doesn't have any OC features, but I wonder if there is a trick to get this thing to run at 3GHz?

Well, I think the E2200 has an 11x multiplier, so a 266MHZ FSB BSEL mod should bring it to 2.93GHZ, which is close enough to 3GHZ.

Good deal.

...and the motherboard has a PCI-E slot for the video card. Grrrr. Why can't there be a Fry's closer to me? I'm buying the parts for an HTPC this weekend and this would have been puuuurfect.

I've been thinking about a budget build for a while and this seems like right deal to jump on.

Along with this E2200 and ECS 945GCT-M/1333, will these other Fry's sale components work well with this setup?

(or Antec Basiq 500W $9.99 AR)

Crucial 2GB PC6400 $22.99 AR
(or AData 4GB PC6400 $64.99 AR)

Or are there better memory deals elsewhere or online?

Will the stock HSF be able to handle the BSEL 2.9GHz overclock? Or what's a good budget HSF for this?

Will these power supplies handle an 8800GT?

Are there any other recommended components for a new build on sale at Fry's tomorrow?

the other fun bit was installing windows xp. forgot that only sp2 supports pci-e/sata blue screen of deathy!!! not pleasant at all.

I was able to do a BSEL mod on this combo. I didn't use the stock HSF though. I don't think most people would recommend that you do, though I do know that some people have done the mod using the stock HSF. The stock HSF is a half-height one, so its not as effective. I'd suggest you pick up a Freezer 7 Pro or something similar.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I missed out on this deal, but I'll be keeping an eye out for the next one. Then I'll definitely look into the Freezer 7 Pro.

It is available in Houston, so it's "probably" available in Dallas as well. Be advised that this motherboard / cpu combo is most definitely NOT guaranteed to overclock successfully to 2.93 ghz. Even with an aftermarket HSF (Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro), and a BSEL mod and a voltage mod, my combo from last month was not stable at 2.93 ghz. I moved the cpu to a different motherboard, and was successful at 3.2 ghz. Others have achieved success overclocking on this motherboard, so YMMV....

my experience was the same...only a modest overclock of 2.6 and i had to increase voltage...

will try again once my freezer 7 comes in...

btw, my board wouldn't even POST on the ecs with the bsel mod but would post on my asus...

If you had to move onto another motherboard why not just buy the e6550 or some other combo. Added the cost of the HSF you probably would hit close to $150-$200 so why not just bite the bullet and go for a better combo.
