For $240 you could have gotten a Q6600 retail (Fry's) and Abit AB9 Pro (newegg AR) just 2 weeks ago, and that combination may still be possible (the Q6600 is selling for about $189 regularly these days, and I think the Abit rebate is good until 4-30). That gets you a nice Quad core chip and an excellent MB.

My experience with ECS boards has been 1 OK, 5 effectively DOAs. The 1 OK is still running a P4. It was the third board. Also went through a couple of ATI chipped boards for an AMD 939 that finally wound up on the Fujitsu badged MSI K8 board listed here about 1.5 years ago. I pretty much stay away from ECS unless I'm going to run stock, and even then be prepared to do some swapping until you get a stable one (ie - buy from a seriously local store that is lenient on returns).

I took my gamerig and turned it into a 2008 server. So I am stuck on my wifes A64 3000+, 2GB of ram, and my 8800GTS 640. Total overkill. So if I could get into a dual core for 80 bucks ill take it.

Edit: The MB is S939 and having no luck finding a 3800+ or better anywhere for a reasonable price. Most shops have them for 109 or more and ebay typically ends about 100 bucks.

You should ask the people at Fry's if they have some processors on clearance sale. A month or two ago, they had Socket AM2 X2 3800s for $35 each (I got the last one for $15 a couple of weeks ago), Socket AM2 3500s for $10-15 each, and a couple of Socket 939 processors I didn't bother to look at.

AMD stopped producing Socket 939 processors, so that's why they're scarce. It was a huge mistake, since people who want to upgrade have to buy a new motherboard and most of them end up buying a Core 2 platform.

Yep, the demise of the 939 cpu's is what made me go with a C2D instead of upgrading my 939 system. I think it has definately hurt amd.

My reason for going C2D was the Q6600. It just smokes the measely 4MB L3 cache on the Phenom, and was around the same price to boot. Coupled with a <$50 MB, and you're gold. (I'd have had to buy different RAM no matter what, and DDR2 is just dirt cheap in the 2X2GB factor).

Well, Froogle is your friend. Using it, I found a few at ZipZoomFly several in the Amazon and even here, here, here, here, and here.

So I made you read all that to give you this link that will provide exactly what you ask for.

You're posting on a tech site, surely you can use a search engine or 4?

I glanced at those links, but I didn't see any dual-core 939 processors for less than $100. That proves to me that the Socket 939 platform is not worth upgrading when you can buy a Pentium E2200 combo or Athlon X2 4800+ Socket AM2 combo for $79.99. Even if you spend that much money on a Socket 939 processor alone, you won't get anything close.

But speaking of Opterons, have you seen the prices lately for Opteron server CPUs? Fry's had some on clearance for $10-15 a month or two ago, and I saw a couple sell on eBay a couple days ago for about $15 each. Have you got a cheap server motherboard you can put those on?

I appreciate the effort. I should have said X2 3800+. I ASSumed most people knew a dual core is what was desired.

Thanks

You don't have time to test stuff, but you have time to build another one?

I paid $80 for my E2180 alone..that's still not a bad deal.

I have the stock cooler kicking around, if you need one.

Why is Fry's the ONLY company that has deals like this? I never see anything this hot from Newegg. Closest Fry's is at least a 12-hour drive. I'm mad 'cuz I can never get in on these.

I agree. Don't get me wrong, I love living in New York, but not having a Fry's around is starting to make me jealous.

One of the salesmen at Fry's once told me that Fry's owns ECS, so the motherboards are practically free for them. I said, "Gee, Fry's is a lot bigger than I thought," and tried not to laugh until he was out of earshot.

But seriously, Fry's probably loses money on these combo deals, but it's a great way to promote themselves. The reason for having them is to get people to come to their stores. Then they can talk people into spending $100 on memory you can get from NewEgg for $40 or to spend $200 on a video card you can get from NewEgg for $120, etc., etc. The salesmen ask you, "Would you be interested in our 1-year service plan for $19.99," or, "Do you need a CPU cooler to go with that processor," and they point you to the so-so ones they sell for a hefty $30. They can even manage to talk some people out of buying an ECS combo and buying a Gigabyte or Asus motherboard instead. People who come to the store also look at the TVs and appliances and other stuff that Fry's can make a lot of money on. Every time you go to the register, they also ask you if you want to sign up for a Fry's credit card, so you can spend more money at their store.

NewEgg doesn't have a store people where their salesmen can pitch other deals, so similar combo deals just wouldn't have the same benefit for NewEgg. So why should offer deals they would lose money on?

I think a lot of us wanted to see Fry's buy the CUSA carcass, rather than TD. That would have been awesome ... Think about it - instant storefronts nationwide ...

I've emailed Fry's in the past, asking them to offer the mobo/CPU combos online, but they said sorry, these offers are in-store only. Also, I asked about east coast (NY,CT, MA) stores, but there were no plans to open stores in these states.

Time to go cry in my beer ...

For those thinking about this deal...the stock cooler works reasonably well, even at 2.9 - peak temps of upper 50's C as measured by my Abit MB. Not great temps but well under the Intel upper threshold.
