<< I'm bummed every time I see these Fry's deals posted. I'm in the San Diego area, and the Fry's ad here just RAISED the price on this package from the $119 it was in December for the board and retail boxed CPU, to $129 for the same thing now. >>

Are you sure it's the same deal even? Someone else mentioned that it was an OEM Duron instead of a retail, like you said. The SKU number should be different if one's a retail and the other is an OEM. The SKU is 3223041 for the $89 combo.
>>

No, it's not the same deal this time, but the retail CPU version package has been $99 in the bay area before, while it was $119 here. Whatever the hot deal is in the Bay area, is typically $20 more here in San Diego.

I jumped on the $99 outpost combo deal... guess what, what you get is what you pay.

I just tried to put together a new system with this combo... no luck! Headaches start right in the beginning... there is no video signal to the monitor at all. I tried so many combinations, like using different memory, 3 different video cards, 2 processors, 2 cd-roms and everything that I can possibly try but no signal. All the mb does is power up all the devices and that's it. This mobo is more like a mofo. I scoured the net for an answer but everyone with this problem is left hanging. I can't even send this product back because Outpost does not accept motherboards back... can't believe outpost's so shady. Anyway, I just want to warn you guys not to buy this pos mb. Go buy yourself a better mb like ASUS or something like that.

actually the mobo is pretty good. It's kind of hit or miss as to you getting one DOA, but as long as you get one thats not, it will prolly run perfect the whole time you own it.
Outposts no return policy does suck donkey balls tho :|

<<<Even though it is painful for customer buying defective Combo from outpost, you at least can get a whole to ecs at
http://www.ecsusa.com/rma.cfm>>>

I had the same no video problem with my K7S5A board I bought at a computer show. I went to the ECS site and this is what I found...ECS

RETURN (RMA) POLICY
* ECS Warranty is offered to direct customers with valid ECS invoice only.

I don't believe buying from a vendor counts for warranty service....pretty crappy if you ask me.

You can return to Frys. You cannot return to outpost.com, so if you buy from them you essentially have no warranty on the motherboard. I fortunately found out before I bought from outpost.com & sent them an email explaining why I would NOT be buying from them. Suggest that everyone interested do the same-losing customers is the best way to get a retailer's attention.

We had that same deal as well, just a week after I bought mine. But that one was OEM correct? Mine was retail CPU. I thought it was the same deal at first and went back to PM but it was a different code adn they said that it was bare CPU, not retail... so I was kinda pissed. But ah well, it was a good deal anyway

I'm assuming that you tried a quality PS. I only mention that because it's the only thing that you didn't specifically mention, and has been mentioned in other threads.

Wow, that Outpost no return policy is lousy!

Because there are K7S5As with problems, I always recommend that people buy these from a dealer with a good return policy. Even better is a local dealer with a good return policy since you won't have to deal with the time and cost involved with shipping. That's why Fry's is a great place to buy from if you are lucky enough to have one nearby. In my experience they are great about returns.

rag15,

Sorry to hear about your problems. I just built my first PC using a K7S5A and, so far, it's working great.

Here are a couple of places that you may want to go looking fo help:

amdmb.com ECS Forum

and:

Mr. Athlon's K7S5A Fix Website

Be aware that the Mr. Athlon fixes are unauthorized and they will void your warranty.

Regarding your no video problem. Did you try a minimum system with just your video card plugged in?

Are you running a PCI or AGP card?

Did you try resetting the BIOS using the onboard jumper?

Do you get any diagnostic beep codes?

Finally, do you have a Fry's nearby? Perhaps they will exchange your board since they own Outpost.

Good Luck!

Bob

Deja vu, dude. I'm going through the same crap as you..trying all configurations and still no display. Everything else seems to work though hard drive, floppy, dvd, fans..everything except the monitor is blank. What vid cards have you tried? I've only got the one Hercules 3d prophet II MX and was looking for another to try.

Same problem here. Installed new MB, and nada. Just beeped at me 7 times. Put the old trusty BH6 back in, and all was fine. Back to Frys with this.

You guys are killing me with these Fry's deals. Being in Cleveland, I can't get close to these deals. The closest thing we have to a Fry's is MicroCenter and I think you guys know the deal there. If there's a way I can buy this stuff online, please let me know. I wish Outpost.com would follow there counterparts lead.

Got mine today in Palo Alto.
I had to get the SKU coz when i went there it was $139!
I got him the SKU off here and yes, $89. I'm using it now, so far so good.
Fast and no probs with installation(WinXP). Also got a Thermaltake 6cu for $12.99.
Only thing is when i run wcpuid it reboots my computer instantly...weird.
How can i tell if my video card is running 4x agp?...

I am have the same problem with WCPUID on windows 98 as well (almost). Whenever I run WCPUID, the BSOD will come out (but not reset). I found out that newer version of WCPUID has get solved this problem. You might want to give it a try.

BTW, I got the previous deal of XP1700+ K7s5a for $189 deal

This is one sturdy board. I just built a cheap computer for someone with this combo and bought a equally cheap case to go with it. After putting everything together I slid the motherboard into the case (cheap case has a strange premium MOBO slide out?!?!) and hit a snag, it wouldn't go in. Pushed it a few times and looked for the snag. The cheap case had the CDROM hitting the memory sockets and had slightly pushed them. I quickly moved everything out of the way. Moved the CDROM up and turned on the system, which wouldn't go on. I cried oh s*** (among some other less friendly words) scared everyone in the house. Walked away a bit put everything back in and the system started. Steady MOBO, even with the slight torture I put it thru. It sometimes doesn't detect the hard drive after restart but not a complete shut down and turn on, but it's a very rare occurance after the system has been up and running for a while.

Can someone who picked up this $89 deal tell me what the cost breakdown is for the motherboard and Duron individually?

I'm guessing K7S5A: $52
Duron: $37
