I have built 12 systems now using one of the combos with the K7S5A and have had good luck only the first board had a battery problem, replaced the battery and that was that, this is not a good board to OC but has been rock solid for the people I have built these for, add on some HD and CdRW, Memory and Case deals you have a cheap, fast computer..

anyone have a link to their ads? i'm goping to be in vegas 7/30-8/5 and want to upgrade

Sorry, LVRJ.com doesn't post them online. Need someone to scan them. For what it's worth, the ads change about every other day. Sat-Thurs, find them on the back of the Sports page. Friday, they have their own 4-5page ad.

However, the Orange County/LA Times ads that people post on here are very close in price to the deals offered in Vegas.

I had a unique problem with the floppy drive controller. If I installed a drive, any floppies created when connected to the ECS board could not be read by any of my other drives (Drive is not formatted, would you like to format now?) Tried this with three seperate and good floppy drives, happened with every single one when I hooked up to the ECS board. Thankfully, XP can boot from cd.

The XP 2400+ and k7s5a PRO mobo combo is advertised for $79.99 in the San Diego UT. I went there and verified it is the pro and bought one. The guy at Fry's told me they still have a truck load of them in the back parking lot, I was tempted to go back there and get it for free instead

Fry's ships? You mean call your local store? how much do they charge for shipping? I had to sign 15 day return blah...blah...blah...

News to me but would be interesting to figure out how this works ... What store are you refering too?

Thanks.

I called the Sunnyvale CA store (I'm on the east coast) about having this combo shipped.
They would honor the $89 price only if I purchased an in-house extended warrantee for $35,
$15 for a fan, and $15 for shipping. $154 total.

Not worth it from where I sit. YMMV, but I doubt it will be much better.
I'd rather go to NewEgg for similar money.

I just purchased one from the Frys on Hamilton, they had a huge stack left. No warranty required

I picked up this combo at the Fry's in Houston today. I was going to use the CPU for myself and sell the mobo to a friend of mine along with my XP 1800+ that I've been using. Now my friend's not sure if he still wants it.

If anyone wants the mobo & the 1800+ send me a PM. I'd like to get $90 shipped for both and I'll throw in a retail AMD heatsink/fan and a CPU shim. This isn't a great deal if you have a Fry's nearby but if you don't I think it's a decent deal. Basically I'll end up paying the tax on the $90 and the shipping costs. XP 1800+ was never overclocked and has been used only by me since I bought it from Newegg about a year ago.

Send me a PM if you're interested.

Pete777.... it is not the boards fault.

You need to go into the cmos/bios setup screen at bootup, and enable the USB ports. Then you need to go into your control panel and look at device manager. There you will see that the drivers for the USB are not installed (well not the enhanced drivers)..... and you need to then put your Motherboards Utilities disk in your drive... then update the drivers for the USB ports... with the disk in the drive... it will take a while.. but eventually the drivers will be found and installed.

That is all you need to do.

FWIW i've been using this exact mobo for 3 or 4 months now and it's been rock solid...it's a very simple install with winxp, with win2k you do have to install a fair amount of drivers...here's the best place for info on this mobo:

linky

there are links at the top of that page with a very helpful k7s5a FAQ & install guide

This kind of stuff will bury AMD. I mean aliance with such a bottom dweller like ECS. Most of the value of this combo is the CPU apparently, ECS just tags along like a parasite.

I don't think AMD really has much to do with this. Fry's just happens to bundle a good CPU with a low-end CPU for the bargain price of $89. More Fry's thing than AMD. They're just rushing to get Athlon XP out soon so that they can claim the speed throne again.

You'd think they'd bundle it with a motherboard instead.

I have this board in my son's machine... First running an Athlon 1.2, then a Duron 700, and finally an XP 1700+. Started with Crucial 512 PC100 and now running a pair of Crucial 128 PC2100 sticks.

Have had ZERO problems with this board. It's been rock solid with no issues at all. Not much of an o/c'r but I prefer stability for my family's machines. I was nervous about using a $40 mobo (what I paid for it last year) but it's been great.

tried everthing that was suggested at WWW.USBMAN.COM . nothing worked, showed all the drivers installed but could not recognize any usb device. Got all updated drivers from VIA, motherboard cd, etc.
so used the best solution as per www.usbman.com, installed a pci to usb card and it is working
as per the site, the chipset is known to have problems in recognizing usb devices

just read o tread at Ocworkbench. it tells you not to install any pci card on the 1@ slot to have the usb2 ports working. I will tried when i get home
