Anyone know if Fry's carries this? I've called them, but I don't think they understand the + part..

Thanks for the info. Seems finding a ddr/raid thunderbird board is a minor miracle around where I live..

I just checked newegg. They don't carry the RAID version, just the non-RAID 8k7a. Anyone know where to find one?

Planned-obsolescence IDE hard drives are bad enough, but multiplying your chances of complete data loss and a decrease in seek time is worthwhile why....?

RAID 1 - no data loss
RAID 0 with IDE...since most of use can't afford SCSI U160 and consumer HDD only go up to 80GB.

And when do you see IDE hard drives becoming obsolete. Your last mobo will probably become obsolete sooner than a HDD. And if you are referring to a serial interface for HDD, then there are always converters.

You can buy the board direct from Epox On-line (tiger) for $179.99 the last time I checked.

RAID 1 is good - I have no problems with anything in RAID1 (other than RAID5, for example, being less wasteful..)

RAID 0: If ANY drive in the array goes down, you're hosed.. the chances of you losing data skyrockets. As far as planned obsolescence goes - I'm referring merely to the expected lifetime of an IDE hard drive, barely longer than the three-year warranty it comes with. I'd never trust an IDE drive over 3 years old with my data - a 10-year-old SCSI drive, built like a tank, I'd trust.

Uh, it's the same way with any drive in that configuration. I guess your odds are 2x given there's two devices. 0+1 is more ideal for ide raid, imho.

As for scsi vs ide, I've experienced the same amount of trouble with both, historically.

I'd rather coat myself in bacon grease and be the starring act in a Sigfried and Roy show than order from tigerdirect. They don't even show if it's in stock- you just get to order and wait, tiger style.

Reliability of a RAID 0 array = MTBF / n, where n is the number of disks.

Thus, statistically, you can expect a 2-drive RAID 0 array to last half as long as the MTBF of one disk.. So, assuming IDE drives are designed to die after about 4 years, I'd be very careful with that array after 2... HPT368/HPT370 came out about 18 months ago, in a few months I expect complaints to start coming in...

-Alex

P.S. - What exactly is the speed increase you expect by using RAID 0?

You must be an engineer, right? =)

I don't give a rat's backside about performance increase on a 0 array. I will be doing a 0+1 on four 80 gig maxtors, though.

Never said TigerDirect was any good! Just that if you want this motherboard right now, it's the place to get it. According to Epox they have stock and Epox is helping on the freight. Next Day was $16 or so.

Does the EP-8K7A+'s Raid controller spin down the drives when not in use? I have heard horror stories about wives kniving computers that are too loud with 2-3 HDD's spinning. My WD is silent.

NoSox: This is straight from a UC Berkeley machine structures course. I have a link, if you wish.

I'm a future cognitive scientist, with a computer science minor.

That's the million dollar question. I'll buy you a candy bar if you find someone that knows...

Doesn't look like anyone in the u.s. has it yet.

Hi, back to the EPOX 8K7A:
Can anyone tell me if the Suspend to RAM and the AGP voltage adjustment work on the board now? According to THIS article, the version they reviewed did not have this functionality.

thanks
MrDarcy
