Got an easy PM at Staples, on three of these. The first store made me go somewhere else, because the add said 1 per customer. The second store let me double down. Came out to about $63 each before tax. Sweet, upgrading my replays and PS2!!!

I told them it was a Maxtor, and reminded them about the 133 ATA being a Maxtor thing, then they called, waited on the phone for 10 minutes, then gave me the PM. Usually they have to call anyway to check if its in stock. Should work

I'm trying to tell myself this same thing! I have 380Gigs of storage already but must resist...

Going to the Grand Opening of the Chicago Fry's tomorrow to pick up a $25 DVD player and hope I can resist these $70 160GB HD's.

I should have repeated that mantra before I bought the drive . I already had two unopened drives (250 & 160) before I decided that I needed to buy it at this price. Hmm. Maybe I should take back what I wrote earlier about this "repost".

What are people's thoughts on the creative speakers. I was going to go with the Z640's but for $10 i might be persuaded to go with the 2.1 setup. I also noticed at least in Seattle that there was a athlon 64 3000+ with This (on newegg site) Mobo special any thoughts on that?

Thanks

I PMed at BB. Easy as pie. I don't paying this much for a 160GB HD, but times are tough and I guess this is as cheap as they get now. I hate inflation. This goes in the closet with my 2 $30 Maxtor 160GB from a few months back.

Thanks, picked up two at the Austin store. They didn't even have a sales tag on the shelf. Just a small sticker saying $69. When I checked out, they said limit (1), but allowed me to use two credit cards, to purchase both drives.

Is there any way to find out, if the platters are 80gbx2?

Warranty: Looks like it's only one year for all Maxtor retail hard drives.
Anyway, I haven't had much problem with Maxtor. I still use a 40gb and 80gb drives which are a few years old.

Alright... I'm tempted by this deal now...

Can someone report the drive models and model # you are getting? I'm assuming it's a DiamondMax Plus 9 with 2x 80GB platters to equal 160GB. Also, these retail kits don't come with that free Ultra-ATA/133 PCI card like before right?

MrCoyote - if you can report the model number, you can look up the tech specs on the Maxtor web site.

Model: 6Y160P0

I looked up the quick specs on their website, but they don't list number of platters. Some reviews said they can be 2 or 3 platters. Really doesn't matter to me. I was just curious.

Hum... I look at the tech specs and didn't see a platters listing either... BUT!
I saw this article and saw this interesting little tidbit:

"After long experiments our colleagues from F-Center found a new identification method - the second figure in the serial number indicates the number of heads. That is why we tested both drives."

Article: Fall 2003: Hard Drives (8MB Buffer) Roundup

So please report back your findings. Thanks!

The second number in my serial numbers is "4".
So I suppose this means the drive has 4 heads, and 2 platters.

"I do not need anymore hard drives"

hahaha! I bought 2 Maxtor 160GB drives during the current deals (both for $62.99) and a Maxtor 120GB. Combined them with my current Maxtor 120GB and i have 2 pretty sweet RAID0 arrays. Man....too much HDs to handle.

Besides these drives i have an external 120GB NextDisk and a 2.5" enclosure with a 40GB HD.

Still have the 2 160 and 1 120gb drives in shrinkwrapped box. Still havent been able to backup enough of my stuff to start doing the RAID0 thing.
