BTW, I went there at about 1 PM on the July 3rd, and they had about two pallets worth of these babies left. Only one per household though

Got two of these today. I bought two 160 GB WD from Fry's last week, when they were $99.99 with a $30 rebate. Took them back and got these today so I don't have to bother with the rebate. I'm still reluctant to open them. I really want to upgrade to SATA and I'm convinced there will be some kick-ass deal on them the minute I open the ones I have.

Thanks for posting that link! I picked up a 250GB Maxtor DM+9 from CompUSA in a prior hot deal thread, and had done some testing, with some strange results. My first HDTach benches that included write-testing, I got about 13MB/s write speed, which seemed awefully low. Later testing showed a write speed of around 30MB/s. That article explains why, and confirmed my suspicions. Apparently Maxtor implements factory-fresh their "write verify" slightly differently than some other mfg's. I've heard that some others normally verify all writes done by the drive, for the first 10 power-on cycles. Apparently Maxtor just does it once, for every sector on the drive.

Anyways, thanks again, it confirms that I'm not crazy for seeing the results I did (which matched the articles nearly exactly), and that my drive is not defective.

Maxtor AMSET utility

I got two of the 160GB drives, and they both came with Acoustic Management set to (ON, Performance). If you want even a little more performance out of the drive, download Maxtor's AMSET utility and turn if completely OFF on these drives. The drive sounds just as quiet to me with it off.
