Soyo and FIC are both good brands, I am not up on the newer models, I would search Toms Hardware or over in the hardware reviews here.

I have a Soyo Dragon Ultra P4 board. Pretty reliable so far. No problems, but I do not do much OC'ing. I think the Lite version should be OK, although I have heard a lot of complaints about the AMD version. That was the previous generation though, and may have been fixed.

Apparently the Soyo boards Frys has for this sale are the updated boards. The newer boards support 333 Mhz FSB and up to 2800+ Athlon chips. I confirmed this personally today.

I bought the 2600+ with Soyo board today--the deal was too good to pass up--even by Pricewatch.com standards.

A knowledgeable Frys rep said the new Soyo boards were great for overclocking. It has a "Anti Burn Regulator" to protect the chip and board.

i think he's in sf bay. there's like 4 frys within miles of me, and believe me, knowledgeable and frys staff should never be used in the same sentence.

Ya lost me there.

I call shenanigans.

*Serious note* edit: What city are you in?

I second! I would rather ask chimps at Los Angeles Zoo about any computer hardware related questions or anything for that matter than morons at Fry's with an intelligence level of a shark.

I agree that MOST Fry's reps are idiots when it comes to product knowledge, but this guy surprised me. He really knew his sh*t. I quizzed him on many detailed computer issues that I know thoroughly--he was spot-on with comments. What can I say?

Yes, these deals appeared in the San Jose Mercury news but can be PM'd with other Frys in other locales.

You can even get the Campbell, CA store to mail you the goods if you're out of State.

Rock solid board at a rock bottom price.

Me: Do you carry Thermaltake HSFs
Fry's employee: Here...(hands me a hard drive cooler)
Me: No, Do you carry Thermal take HSFs?
FE: Here...(hands me a coolermaster)
Me: No, Do you carry Thermaltake HSFs?
FE: This? (grabbing Thermal compound)
ME: No, Do you carry Thermaltake HSFs? Thurm-all-take.....heet-sink?
FE: We have this one, it is better (hands me the coolermaster again) At this point I am thinking. This employee clearly understands cooling because he is offering me a better product than I wanted to buy. A knowledge-able-employee

Or maybe he just didn't listen and has yet to listen.

I bought the FIC last week and am pleased with it....but I got the 2400 for a much lower price

Another buuuuump for ECS. I've got the earliest rev of that board, the one that did give some people problems, and it's been the most stable, problem-free board I've owned. If you want to dig into it, go to OCWorkbench and check out their ECS forum, it's the best one I found when I was setting up.

That said, I'd go nforce2 unless you're pinching the pennies.

The XP2600+, the XP2800+, and the Pentium are all retail boxed CPU's, so that adds a little value to the deal too (youdon't have to buy a HS, Fan.

Hmmmm...so what's better, the Soyo or the FIC?

The ad says Fry's self-pricematch is 30 days, BUT it says microprocessors only have a 15-day PM. I don't know whether they consider the combo deal a "microprocessor" or not.

NorcalSci, I would suggest you order the xp2500+ from NewEgg for $90 then get the 8rda+ from Fry's. I saw it labeled for $79.99, best overclocker for the money.
GL and HTH.

anyone know if this is one per customer?

I am going this weekend to pick one up for myself and my friend Winchester (he's in a state w/o a Fry's!)

If it's not one per customer, I'll gladly pick up a combo for anyone....just pay me for the product, shipping, and maybe a few dollars for having to deal with Fry's.

that ECS combo is 79.99 in SD,

it took me 6 hours to get the board working right,
troubleshooting like mad- then I discovered that disabling onboard sound solved
ALL probs, hehe (got it last Fri. on a raincheck with the 2200+ for $70), very fast
