Ground shipping for me (VA) is $7.29. Still a good deal. But other than packaging, do you get anything else in the retail box? Both OEM and retail have 5 yr. warranty.

A cable would be nice. I'll just have to see when it comes in (I couldn't resist and I ordered one).

Anyone knows how these (Raptor) drives stack up against 16mb cache drives(assuming all other things, except RPM(7500 vs 10000) are the same) ?

hers a quote from storage review.com:

Ironically, despite the inclusion of command queuing and the associated promise of better multi-user performance, the WD740GD follows in the footsteps of its predecessor. The WD360GD won over many fans in the enthusiast/gaming community thanks to its outstanding single-user performance. Western Digital's newest entry shatters previous records by even more astonishing margins. In addition to leaving all other 10k RPM SCSI drives in the dust, the WD740GD approaches the performance of the 15k RPM Fujitsu MAS3735 and Maxtor Atlas 15k in the Office and Gaming DriveMarks. Further, it handily bests the two powerhouses in the High-End and Bootup DriveMarks. Overall, for non-server use, Western Digital's Raptor WD740GD is the fastest single hard disk one can buy regardless of spindle speed, interface, or price. The fact that it is so quiet, runs much cooler, and remains significantly less expensive than its SCSI counterparts is simply icing on the cake. Make no mistake about it- the Raptor WD740GD is the drive for power users, period.

See: AnandTech Review of 16mb cache Maxtor Maxline III
Final Words
With the MaXLine III, Maxtor has given users a good in-between point for those who want the capacity of a 7200RPM drive, but with the performance of Western Digital's 10,000RPM Raptor.
Zipzoomfly has these for $240. Link

WEll WebDude that opened my eyes, but I still am kinda stuck on that 5 year warranty, plus i dont have $240 to spend :/ I guess for system/maya 6/photoshop this will be fast enough. Plus I knida like the brute force approach to make things fast, rather than adding 16mb of cache and tweaking things, but the advantages are obvious in the case of Maxtor: $.80 a gig and similar performance. Ill probably get one eventually to match the raptor and use my old IDE drives for Backup. But thats down the road

I still think the laurel wreath has to go to the Raptor (among sata drives). For a more detailed breakdown see: Storage Review database comparison

Yah i tend to lean towards Storage Review's opinions rather than Anand when it comes to the one thing they review ( also quite a bit more in depth i would say with al due repect to anand and the crew). 5 year warranties are where its at, so i think i'll keep it, although I was considering nuking my order for about 20min.

For those who don't know. The WD "Secure connect" cable has a much firmer connection to the drive ... It won't get pulled out as easily as a standard cable if you are working in the case. It does however cover the new SATA power connector and forces you to use the old molex.

So basicly you get agreat SATA cable that only works on WD drives.

It's WD Manufacturer Rebate, not an Outpost rebate. Outpost sucks, but if they do ship the drive out it's a good deal.

The base price before rebate is pretty nice for a brick and mortor (B&M). And why I'll have to fight myself not to go pickup one. I've already got 3 of the 36g Rators.

Got mine today, works great with a Abit IS7 (just have to make sure you have it turned on in the BIOS) Native SATA with Intel ICH5 south bridge is where its at ( although the drivers are circa 2003). Now that pesky buisness of moving my os partition to the new drive and remove the former patition, and resize teh remaining partition and keep everything working....

Ordered mine on Fri. Box was waiting on my doorstep Mon. morning (not sure exactly when it came). That was standard shipping too.
Very nice drive. A bit of seek noise is noticeable (haven't mounted it inside the case yet), but very fast. Noticeable improvement in load times.
