Fry's has been unloading the Seagate 7200.8s for $70 after rebate. They had the 250GB/16MB two weeks ago. The 300GB/8MB version expired yesterday. Both were PATA drives. I noticed that 99% of those units were Made in China. Most of the Seagate SATA drives had Made in Singapore on the box.
Saw one 300GB/8MB PATA drive with the Made in Singapore label, so I pulled the trigger (only 23 cents per GB). The unit was assembled in Jan 2006. I'm hoping that the reliability problem with the 7200.8 is isolated to the older Made in China units. Worst case senario...5-yr warranty. Gonna run this drive into the ground!
