ECS.
Very cheap boards, almost cheap enough to use as land fill. I picked one up for my kids computer, and the sales person at Fry's said "you know theese boards have a lot of problems?" Swear to god it's true.

lol... they always do that at frys.. try to act like you are making a bad choice in buying the combo they advertise..and offer some way more expensive combo. ive built 6 systems using frys ecs combos in the last 5 months... not one came DOA and they are all still working today, perfectly stable. have you ever even used a ecs board?

I am curious about these mobos...will this handle a 250 gig drive directly off the IDE channel or do you still need to install a ATA card. Thanks

I believe if you have XP SP1 or 2 installed already, you can run it directly. Even if you didn't have the SPs, use the formatting software that comes with the 250gig drive, and you can then use the drive directly.

Its true they ALWAYS tell you this. Have you tried different ram? When new computers have problems, I find that it tends to be the ram. I am guessing you got the cheap de jour RAM from Frys.

For my 0.02, I have had two machines with ECS boards that did not make it beyond 12 months. The third is in a new P4 3.2E machine I just built up for my wife. I am hoping I don't have a similar experience with hers... life could get miserable real fast if her machine dies. I know 2 out of 3 is a small sample size for a survey, but, like I say, my 0.02.

I am considering trying a PC Chips board for my next budget project just to try to upgrade in quality from ECS!

Dr. Jeff, PC Chips merged with ECS in 1998, so I don't know if you're going in the right direction if you're trying to get away from ECS.

I look at it this way.

If you need something that's as cheep as can be for some gaming. The $160 CPU Motherboard combo can handle any current game thrown at it. The $40 saved will make a bigger differance in performance if added to the video card or memory.

Yeah but $40 more and you'll get to play those 64 bit games when they finally roll around (other than the ONE game that's out lol)

This is a joke right? A clever one about how they're the same company...right?
