I guess you should have stop at Fry's Aniversary sales last week when they have a XP2000 w/ECS for $69.99. I got 2.

How do you like the ECS board? I've heard mixed thing on it.

Also, beware of the IBM Drive. Many are refurbs. Considering that you can get a WD or Seagate for $79 w/mir, this is not a great deal

not available in san diego. ad is the same except instead of the 2400+, they have a celery 2.0 and ecs board for $69. not bad for someone looking to build a cheapie email station.

I just got ECS board today and its really suck compare to other boards. I got it for 49.99 at dallas frys and got xp 1700 b stepping from newegg for 43. This board is not for overclockers. Board only goes up to 166fsb and you can only do 100/133/166. I'm getting refund and getting refurbished board from newegg

I got this board when the deal was $120, and let me tell you it is very bad. Right now it is running stable, but here is what happened to me. First, it wouldn't post with a secondary IDE channel. I loooked around, and found out, it doesn't like Netgear NICs of which I have 2, so I took them out, and that was fixed. I put in a Linksys NIC, and everything went fine, but it wouldn't recognize my sound card. It will basically do one or the other, but not both. So, even though I have 3 NICs around here, I can only use the onboard one. Sorta disappointing. But, for that price, just keep it as a backup and get a real mobo somewhere else.

The Houston Fry's has the Celeron 2000 deal, not the XP2400 deal. Disappointing. But I did notice an 8 port switch for $19.95, not bad at all.

On the ECS K7S5A motherboard, I have setup a number of these. They are not intended for overclocking, or for power users. If you wish to setup a basic system, and use the onboard sound and ethernet, the only thing to be careful of is to have a good power supply and you will be very happy.

God, I remember paying $100 for an 8 port switch, the "Chia Special," as I recall. Annd it was a great deal at the time, heh

So, on the Athlon XP 2400+, how are they at OC'ing? I've got a 1700+ at 2100Mhz right now (roughly 2700+ speed) so I wonder if this would be worthwhile? Of course, I'm also considering adding another 512 stick to round out to 1.5 Gigs...maybe that would be a better expenditure...hmmm....

So far I have setup 2 systems with the ECS board/XP2000 Combos and neither has any problem so far. I have been running for 4 days straight with Soft Sandra Burn In "I think that is what is was called" and has not crash once yet. Since these are your basic systems I used the on-board: Lan and Sound. If you are planning to OC don't buy ECS but if you are planning to build a basic budget pc the combo is a excellent choice for the price. My 2 cents.

The Fry's combo deal includes a BARE XP 2400+ (supposedly T'Bred). It's not bad for 110 buck with ECS K7S5A though. You get the mobo almost for free. The only thing I don't like about this deal is I don't know what to do with the mobo. Right now, I have 2 K7S5A sitting around at home collecting dust. The 1. one I've used ran fine w/o any problems for about 3 months, then integrated sound went dead. So I've replaced the mobo with another brand. The 2. K7S5A I've got also thru a combo deal at Fry's while the 1. one was still working. I just needed the CPU for another machine. The 2. K7S54A I haven't touched since.

I think the only thing good about this mobo is it lets you use either SDRAM (which was OK last year but totally obsolete nowadays) or DDR PC2100. Since the mobo is so cheap, you can't expect any quality from this board. Easily come and go. If you're looking into setup a cheap rig, get this board but be aware of the poor quality. That's my 2 cents...
