FTP - passive port question

I can connect to my FTP server but after entering passive mode the connection fail "port failed". I am using Ser-U at home and WS_FTP to ftp.

I forward all the ports correctly, I also opened 10 passive port on the router. Don't know if I need to do that.

My question is how come sometime I can connect back to my FTP server and sometime it doesn't work. Do I need to specifie which passive port to use in my FTP client?

If serv-u is behind a router, then you need to make sure that serv-u knows your IP address. When you run in passive mode, the ftp server (serv-u) has to tell the client what its IP number is. There is an option in serv-u to specify the IP address.

The port used in PASV transfers can be anything about 1024, you can't specify 10 ports on router and just hope for thet best.

In the passive mode setting I did had my IP in it. My problem is I sometime can connect home and sometime can't. I think it might be the software? I always had no trouble using IE to connect home.

You also have to specify which port ranges to use in serv-u. They recommend 2000 to 2010. Then you have to forward the same ports on your router.

From the serv-u website:

Configure the router to forward ports 20 and 21 to the internal IP address where Serv-U is listening. This allows the FTP traffic to be routed through the router and into Serv-U. There should be options in the router to forward these ports.

In Serv-U setup the IP for Passive mode to reflect the actual IP Address and not the Internal IP address Serv-U sees:
Select "Settings" under your domain.
Select the "Advanced" tab.
Enter the external IP address of your internet connection. If you are using Serv-U with a dynamic IP address, leave this field blank. More info on using Serv-U with a dynamic IP address can be found in Article 1242.
Set up the PASV port range option in Serv-U. Under "Local Server" select "Settings" and then the "Advanced" tab. Here you will see the PASV port range option.
When setting up the PASV port range, we recommend opening up ports 2000 - 2010. Then open up the same port range in your router and map them to the Serv-U server.

You should now be able to connect from any FTP Client using PASV mode.

However, if you are still unable to connect disable the Block "FTP_bounce" attacks and FXP. This option has been known to cause complications with some connections.
