FTP + ROUTER = Crap...HELP?!

I recently had a Dlink DI-704P router, it never worked when I tried to setup a FTP therefore I switched to the Netgear RP618 Router. I have setup everything to open port 21 and even set up my computer as DMZ. I have no idea wtf is going on, when I unplug my router all is fine...
when I try to locally connect to my ftp with my router intact I get a Cannot connect because connection was actively refused error...please help

What mode are you using on your client? Passive or active?

Make sure the FTP server is turned "on" first

maybe u need to specify some port range for the passive mode, forward that ranges in the router and start the server to use passive mode

when you connect from outside your network always use passive
when you connect from inside the network use the active / port mode

Some routers does not like to forward ports in another range when the DMZ is on! And be sure to open both port 20 and 21.

Make sure you are using the correct IP to connect. If you are on one of your computers inside the router, you will need to use your internal LAN IP. However, if you are on a computer outside your lan you will need to use the external IP.
