So I got a letter today...

The Enlistment Act (Chapter 93).

Enlistment Notice (Operationally Ready National Service)

You are hereby required under Section 10 of the Enlistment Act (Chap 93) to report for enlistment on 09 Dec 2005 at 0830 to 1st BATTALION SINGAPORE GUARDS.

Guards are basically your heliborne/fast strike infantry.

Studies have to be put on hold till this is over Damn what a waste of 2 years. Be glad you dont have a draft.

Canada, here I come.

Sorry to hear that.

Must be nice to let others do the hard work to protect your way of life, but if they would potentially ask you to get up and help yourself you'd run away. Nice.

Don't you get some kind of benefit (beyond the freedoms you enjoy) from service though? Free school or something?

In Singapore, do they still enlist you if you have poor eyesight?

I have 20/500 vision (and weigh less than what is minimally required), so even if a draft occurred, I would probably not be enlisted.

Couldn't you fake the eye exam? "Z...F...W...MONKEY...CAT...GORILLA...JOHN TESH...."

You can't run from it, they'll find something for you Probably non combat though.

Not to get into such a discussion, but no one should have any sense of duty to any country or flag, but only to the world.

All soldiers and citizens should feel a sense of duty to the world, as a citizen of the world, not a citizen of a government (which is only a temporary institution srt up to enforce laws), defending freedom around the world.

Ben Franklin said it best, "Where freedom is, there is my home."

Thomas Paine also, "The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion."

I have great respect for those who serve in the name of all the world and all mankind, not a silly flag or a bunch of crooked politicians (which is all a government is made of).

I think it is the whole concept, in the US it is optional to serve, hence if you enlist, you will be doing a service to the country.

Here, its like the country has given you this much, and now it is time for you to pay it back by doing this for us hence the low pay

Nope, nothing at all.

600 a month for 2 years. No more hardware for me

600 a month? Whys it so low??

that is about half of what a new recruit gets in the US ($1,142.70)

Cost of living differences? Because they are being drafted while US recruits join voluntarily?

Yeah, but that average GDP per capita is $27k vs $40k for the US, so it's not quite as bad as it looks, although it's not great.

I'd be willing to buy a bunch of those Wendy's cups to get the free airtran ticket (one way of course in this case) to ship his @ss to Canada! Who's with me?

The modern day United States I would not miss. Bring back Washington's, Paine's, Franklin's, Lincoln's United States. The United States built on freedom was ruined by power hungry politicians and selfish voters. It's a socialist country now, progressive taxes, a regulatory agency for everything under the sun, wars, the patriot act. No different from any EU country and it's only getting worse.
