I would however makes sacrifices to help others in a less fortunate position. I would also defend the people I care about.

I think my question is: what are you defending?

Now you're REALLY going to turn this into a P&N thread. Ostensibly we were fighting to remove a tyrant who was intent on doing harm to our country and was allegedly capable of doing so indirectly by supplying terrorists with weapons of mass destruction. Clearly many people do not believe that he was a threat to us, hence the controversy over the current war. I will leave the discussion of whether or not we should be fighting in Iraq to P&N... two years ago.

Edit: the answer to your specific question "what are you defending?" is supposedly ourselves against terrorism.

Why don't you ask the Iraqi government what we were fighting for, right after they convict and execute Saddam?

I think you might've miss-read my question

so I'll repeat it: What are you defending?

That's sad depending on your point of view. My buddies had to do it for two years. They were PRs there. I was on a student pass. Two of them are in officer's school, the third is in the Sembawang ammo dump hauling stuff around for drills.

Yeesh, just serve your time, and make the most of the situation. You should come away with many useful skills. And don't give me that "I'm an infantry grunt, all I can do is clean and fire a rifle" bullsh!t. At a bare minimum, you'll come away with time management skills, financial management skills, a whole plethora of leadership skills, etc. But you'll only learn them if you stop sulking and open your eyes.

BTW, I'm currently serving my first 6 year enlistment at the moment.

They'll drop you off in the middle of Fallujah, and, I promise you, you'll find you can "flat out" run for quite a bit more than 10 seconds.

Edit: the answer to your specific question "what are you defending?" is supposedly ourselves against terrorism.

I'm not trying to cause any arguments at all, far from it in fact. Lets talk hypothetical and remove governments, politics, cultural differences etc from this discussion.

Homosapians have an inbuilt ability to hunt, kill and defend. Like the majority of all other mammals we share this planet with. The reasons most animals do this is to provide for the group, family or themselves.

With the current state of the world, we should have no reason to interfere with other peoples lives. But what has happen recently is a form of fascism (probably not the kind you might be thinking of) - we all have the right to defend ourselves, but not in an aggressive way (can anyone give me an example where aggression resolved an issue rather than escalating it to a stage where the other party coward away).

This sounds like we are fighting for the greater good of the world. There is not a single person I know who can explain to me what the greater good of the world is, or how to achieve it.

So, instead of fighting fire with fire, give them whatever they want. land, money or any other asset they want to die for. Let the people who don't want to fight make their own decision whether to surround themselves with hatred or to find a neutral ground where they feel secure. I, myself, prefer to live and will continue to offer my services in places where I don't have to worry about a barrel of a gun

If I'm not mistaken our two Countries just passed a law that would, if ever you guys enlist Draft again, make it illegal for Draft Dodgers to enter Canada. You'd be immediately detained and deported at the border, followed by some comfy jail time when you got back home.

Must be nice to let others do the hard work to protect your way of life, but if they would potentially ask you to get up and help yourself you'd run away. Nice.

you know i never thought of it that way.

you completely made me rethink everything negative i've ever thought about the draft.

cheers presence !!!

I don't UNDERSTAND YOU GUYS!

Hey! It's an excuse to kill other people! LEGALLY! Why the hell would you want to pass up an opportunity like that? I would take full advantage of this rare opportunity to further your development as a person.

JESUS!
