Canada, here I come.

Sorry to hear that.

Must be nice to let others do the hard work to protect your way of life, but if they would potentially ask you to get up and help yourself you'd run away. Nice.

He couldn't get in any way. DADT

Who's "protecting my way of life"? Was Saddam Hussein going to come and beat me up and steal my computer and my bike? You need a reality check. Stop spouting rhetoric/talking points, because it makes you look like a brainwashed idiot.

Protecting your way of life means fighting for democracy. The USA is a democracy and fighting when the country says to fight whether you agree or not, is fighting to protect the democratic process.

I am a Sergeant First Class in the Israel Defense Forces. Israel has mandatory conscription, but since I was found unfit for combat duty (being an only child is enough, but I had health issues as well) I was assigned to the IT corps. I do .NET development and Oracle database design and administration for free for three years and then two more years for way below market wage, after which I'll be a better hire than unexperienced CS grads (most of us do our studies in evening courses anyway).
I serve my country and gain excellent training and experience for later civilian life in a career path I had known I'd pursue regardless of my military career as an enlisted man and later reservist. I see no problem with that. Of course, in Israel, it's easy to see why we need an army, though ?pacifists? (?sociopaths? being usually closer to the truth) are a rising concern.

I think even most so called "America haters" would serve their country if they truly believed they and their country's people's lives were being threatened. I'm not an "America hater", but I would serve to protect others if I believe they were being threatened, but I'm no one's war zombie who will fight for someone's political ambitions or monetary gain, which is the opinion Zysoclaplem was going for.

I think Zysoclaplem was not correctly understood.

Zysoclaplem, tell me to STFU if I'm wrong.

I don't think we'd ever have a draft to fight a war like the one we're fighting in Iraq. I could be wrong though. Vietnam posed no danger to us, but we were fighting communism. Just replace communism with terrorism and I suppose there's the possibility. But I don't think the situations are entirely comparable - the war on terror is largely a war of intelligence gathering. It's not a war that is fought by a conscripted army with minimal training.

Yeah, my way of life hasn't really been threatened for a while... and I have to say that the engineers that make the weapons would probably protect my way of life more than a soldier.

I think you both have been completely understood, and please don't worry. Your abilities to share your "armchair quarterbacking" will be protected by other people that won't be remembered, compensated properly, or ask for anything from you.

That's a huge stretch. Based on your logic, anyone who does anything is "protecting our way of life".

Yes, if starting political wars is our way of life, I guess soldiers are protecting it.

It's a volunteer army, if you join it, you're by definition being properly compensated, otherwise you would have taken some other job.

Without trying to sound P&N-ish US is not a democracy it's an electoral leadership

There's a hundred different ways you could describe our government accurately. Wikipedia for instance refers to it as a "Democratic federal republic." My point is, there was really no point to call it into question in the first place unless Monkey muppet felt that the precise term for our form of government had some bearing on ThePresence's point, and if he did it would have been nice to know what that was.

so, could someone remind me again, what the US is fighting for, if every person has a different ideology.

I'm not from the US personaly, which means my ideas and understandings may be a little off from yours. I would not put myself in danger because of what one man (or woman) says. I would however makes sacrifices to help others in a less fortunate position. I would also defend the people I care about.

I think my question is: what are you defending?

Going to Canada wouldn't do anything. For one, it'd be near impossible for you to get in. Secondly, the minute the US gov't found out where you were, Canada would gladly be shipping your ass back (in handcuffs) so you could spend some time in jail for draft dodging.

If you really want to avoid the draft, go to France. And please, STAY THERE.

Why don't you ask the Iraqi government what we were fighting for, right after they convict and execute Saddam?
