Joint Venture with China's HPC giant

Our sources are confident that AMD is about to announce a joint venture deal with China-based Sugon company.

Sugon might not be a name you've heard much about, but the company has now made a direct deal to manufacture server-based hardware for the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In their own words:

"Sugon Information Industry Co., Ltd. (Sugon for short) is a national high-tech enterprise established on the basis of the major scientific research achievements of the National High Technology Research and Development Program (the 863 Program) with the vigorous promotion by the Chinese Academy of Sciences."

The company specializes in R&D and manufacturing of high-performance computers (HPCs), enterprise servers and datacenter products, and they also do some software design and system integration as well. Between 2009 and 2014, they were on China's TOP 100 supercomputer list consecutively by market share.

Sugon made news recently with its Nebula high-performance computer that managed to get ranked second place in the 35th Global Supercomputer TOP 500 Competition. The supercomputer they built topped a 3 petaflops per second system peak and a 1.271 petaflops times per second measured Linpack speed. These numbers easily made it the third supercomputer in the world with performance measuring over a petaflop (PF).

AMD is about to announce a joint venture with this company, and if the deal includes any cooperation with future next-generation products such as AMD's Zen x86 high-end CPU, then the Silicon Valley company might be on the right track here. The performance of AMD's server-based Zen products plus the potential use of Tarnhelm Zen meets AMD's Greenland APU server product, which sounds like a great idea. Fudzilla has mentioned the existence of up to a 16-core Zen APU with Greenland HMB 2.0 GPU, DDR4 support and a super fast interconnect with coherent fabric more than a year ago.

According to an interview from Inside HPC with Dr. Qing Ji, Deputy General Manager of the HPC Division at Sugon, the overseas company plans to expand to the western market. Coincidence?

So Sugon wants to use AMD hardware for HPC. I'm sure they're looking at Zen + Polaris. Nothing else makes sense, not really.

US Federal Government would not allow this.

Any company they consider vital for US security whether it is technological or military they will get involved and look at the deal prior to it go through and then approver or not approve the deal. Remember the Dubai Ports World-United Arab Emirates political bru ha ha of 2006. Pretty much similar stuff (though not quite the same)

Note this is not limited to the US, the EU does this as well.

Remember a company incorporation doctrine rests in a specific country and sometimes a specific state like Delaware and such. When you are going to acquire a majority share of a company and you are a foreign investor, or if you want to move the companies existence from one country to another (changing the incorporation doctrine)

Please realize that you do not truly own a company like I personally own a 12 pack of soda and right now I am drinking I diet coke from that 12 pack., no you have limited ownership, sometimes almost complete ownership sometimes very limited for this is a corporation and the individual corporation bylaws but also the laws of the state and country also apply.

That is the whole point of corporations, like it for better but also for worse, you gain most of the benefits but you surrender some of your power in exchange for limited liability of things like if the corporation does something wrong you personally do not get sued and can go bankrupt and lose your hose, for the corporation assets are not tied to your assets, but in exchange you have to play by an extra set of rules.

I don't know if AMD would be considered vital to national security. Then again, I don't know if you want China abusing AMD to get a jumpstart on building homegrown HPC equipment either.

So Sugon wants to use AMD hardware for HPC. I'm sure they're looking at Zen + Polaris. Nothing else makes sense, not really.

As the article mentions, the Greenland APU is probably what they are after.

As the article mentions, the Greenland APU is probably what they are after.

Greenland is now Vega, no? I'm more expecting to see something Polaris-class (only with HBM2) first.

I don't know if AMD still calls the HPC APU Greenland but yeah.

I am 100% agreeing with you, but also look at the optics to a non technical person.

Communist China is buying American Computer Company, the Company that make the chips that run your computer. Some experts cite security risk. CPUs are in use with defense department computers and technology.

I am not trying to disparage China, I am just stating this hits all the emotional hotspots.

I am just saying vegas odds I do not think this happens no matter who is in congress for it is so easy to derail with a grassroot astroturf campaign.

They already put all their money on VIA. And seems that they became very serious on it.
