Yep, Zen APUs only in 2017.

Zen launches first as Next Generation FX processors.

I hope AMD will distance itself from that destroyed brand.

Just see where the Pentium brand ended after P4.

They need to come up with something new in naming, then they can call value CPUs for FX or drop it entirely.

I agree. I have used AMD cpus since the 386DX-40. AMD was the upstart "hotrod" that gave Intel a run for its money.

The FX started as a premium brand but the Bulldozer and or Piledriver pretty much sullied the "FX" reputation FOREVER! (In owned both).

Makes sense to me.

A64 was AMD's premium brand until it was essentially turned into a cheaper alternative after Phenom and then later BD was released.

Intel has kept the Pentium name around as a product better than the Celeron, but not as good as their i3/i5/i7 line.

The FX brand has to go. There is zero point in bringing it back with the way most people think of it.

Intel did the same thing with the Pentium name after the P4. Its now their bargain basement grade CPU.

AMD should seriously consider a naming scheme that is simpler for people. Intel has Core i3, i5, and i7, so people know just by the name which one is better than the others.

There should still be some rivers in India or some island in the ocean that they can take a name from *cough* xD

AMD already used that naming scheme for APUs. They even made sure they were "one more" than Intel. A4, A6, A8, and later adding A10.

Intel's naming system is fine for the desktop, except at the low end when you have atom being rebranded as celeron and pentium. But if you look at mobile, it is a mess. Desktop i5 are all quad cores, but no mobile i5s are. i7 is confusing too since they range from low voltage dual cores to the top end mobile quad. I agree, AMD is no better. The desktop FX lineup is fine (naming wise) but now they had to stick FX on mobile. And whenever i see an a4 or A6 model. i pretty much have to google to see whether it is cat core or big core.

Phenom III is a name I approve.

Good that you're thinking the Zen based CPUs will be stellar performing so they need a brand that reflects that just as the original FX series did.

Regardless of what AMD launches in 2016 the FX brand will be a drag on the product, not a value improvement. Think about it, if Zen is good most people will shun it because FX has been crap for, what, 5 years, and if Zen is another crap, people wouldn't even touch the thing because of the tarnished brand, while they could give AMD's crap a try if it had some "newness" factor involved.

On the other hand, the target enthusiast audience (of which many of us are) can see through brand naming anyways, and if it works, then word of mouth from the enthusiasts will trickle down to the common folk anyway by the time APU flavor Zen is ready.

This takes years. You still see a lot of people under the impression that AMD's graphics drivers are the same mess they were a decade ago.

I do agree with you, FX is tarnished beyond repair, same goes to bulldozer, steamroller and even excavator. I even would forget phenom, yet it was great name for product that had unfortunate launch and ultimately didn't live up to the hype.

I kinda like ZEN already, but it wont stick so amd needs to think some name that sounds powerful, refresh and sticks. If it's successful product, people will learn it fast and it will grow momentum fast and sell a ton.

Seriously?

Just go on some less technical forum (toms hardware) and you will see a ton of genuinely clueless people trying to upgade their video card who refuse to consider AMD because they think of poor drivers.

You get a lot of people asking: "Which GPU should I get?" Followed by a list of Nvidia GPUs (shows they initially were not considering AMD).

There are significantly less now than a couple years ago.

Only that it actualy still holds true

AMD cards need stronger cpus to get the same performance although they are stronger cards, amd absolutely needs mantle ,nvidia just makes optimized dx11 drivers.
This is a driver issue.

Its bad for sales tactics to make sense. The point is to drive sales in a way that they(the company selling them) want. If people understand the model numbers much clearer, the company wouldn't have the control, the buyers will.

Those who make informed decisions won't be confused either way, but the majority of the revenues are from the masses. If the branding helps to increase sales by even 3%, they would go crazy to get that. That's likely why server model numbers are much more sane, because people make more knowledgeable decisions.
