Thats pretty much a myth. Prices are directly the same. Simply with VAT added.

Not a myth, computer components at least here in Finland are very similar price in terms of numbers compared to US prices, just in euros and with tax included. A 280X costs $300 with 0 % VAT on newegg, and 300 € with 24 % VAT in Finland.

Similarly for power supplies, cases, motherboards... you name it.

It does depend on location within Europe though. Central Europe gets lower prices - even with Germany's 19 % VAT, their computer components are 10-20 % cheaper than in Finland.

So over 800 USD? Unless my brain stopped working.

If it's Euros it's 687USD

$690 VAT included at today's exchange rate.

If that VAT is then pre-tax price =

15% $600
20% $575
25% $552

Quick check looks like Computer related VAT is ~20% in France.

AMD is launching the Radeon R9 290X today. The R9 290X represents AMD's fastest single-GPU video card ever produced. It is priced to be less expensive than the GeForce GTX 780, but packs a punch on the level of GTX TITAN. We look at performance, the two BIOS mode options, and even some 4K gaming.

This review will be published at 11:01PM ET tonight.

IF R9 290X is selling for $499, then there is something seriously wrong with the prices Nvidia charge for GTX 780. lol

I doubt it will be $500, $600 seems likely.

Zero completion for nine months, seems Nvidia priced them perfectly all things considered. Now they will probably need adjusting, but that is to be expected.

11 CST, I'll be up for that

Nvidia hasn't been price/performance competitive for a while in the high end GPU market and there hasn't been much reason to become competitive since people are still willing to pay a 62.5% premium for 15-25% performance increase (770 to 780) or 250% premium for a 25-40% performance increase (770 to Titan).

I doubt it will be $500, AMD is notorious for gouging on release.

Citation please? If you are referring to 7970 introduction price, it was priced roughly on par with GTX 580 3GBs. You'd probably have to go back past the 4800 series to find some instances where performance was questionable for the starting MSRP.

Edit: Looks like the odd nature of the statement was apparent to the poster.

R9 290X beats 780 by almost 20% and they will sell it for $150 below? How does that even make sense?

But I don`t trust those silly frenchies. We are almost at 24th now and truth will be revealed

Remember the times when a $300 HD4870 was beating a $400 GTX260 and even being not that far away from the $650 GTX280 in some games? Or 2xHD4850 for $400 slapping said $650 GTX280 silly?

I do

And I remember nVidia prices falling way way down to be competitive really fast.

Remove VAT and compare. And you find prices are pretty similar in all EU countries vs US if you average out the few shops. You can even find that newegg is regular more costly than most EU shops. Example, 4670K cost 239$ at newegg. And cost between 225$ and 230$ in most of europe without VAT. While you can also find it at MC for 199$.

Since you're going to leave it.

I didn't remove it because it was odd, I removed it because I knew it would cause problems.

Need a citation? 9590.

Prediction based on AMDs past: R290X will come in fairly high, sell poorly, and receive incentives and price drops without anything from Nvidia forcing such actions.

Oh, thought you might at least have some reasons based on the GPU market history. Delving into CPUs is like dragging Shield and Tegra into Nvidia GPU performance and pricing discussions.

corporate strategy at its finest if true.

tell all partners the card will be $650 knowing that info will get released and you have nvidia show its hand.

780 ti is now getting price pressure. may not even be worth it for nvidia now.

7970 was the same, plus it is the same company there is no reason to separate the two as if they were two different entities.

We're not discussing product performance, we're discussing cooperation pricing strategy.

Biggest diffrence for consumer (aside of VAT) is that in US:
1 you have bigger and more frequent sales on product in it's late 'life cycle' / previous-gen and
2. absence of mail rebate / rebate card in EU.

MSRP is like you say is practically identical in US and EU.

I would say biggest difference is the 2 year minimum warranty and shop hand in for RMA.

I think the non X version will offer an absolute ton of value, especially with OCing in mind.

For most PC parts, especially those we talk about most on this forum. - dGPUs and CPUs - almost everything in this department in US is 2 years or more, so that in this case EU law is not making diffrence cost wise.

Cannot comment on US retailers/law RMA policy as I lack experience in this matter.

If the non x version turns out to be better than my card I'll consider it. I usually go for the upper models because I don't overclock much. In fact I only overclocked my 7970ghz when I first got it to see if I could do it and bench it.
