Fuel in the oil?

car is a 02 Suzuki Grand Vitara 2WD 2.5V6

gf called me saying that it was making some funny noises, sounds like a clattering coming from the top end, she checks the oil and says it's thin and smells like fuel

i'm about to go take a look at it, i'm thinking leaky fuel injector

i'm more of an old school chevy and harley kinda guy, so i don't know too much about these newfangled fuel injected computer controlled vehicles

anything else that could cause the injector to leak besides the injector itself?

any other suggestions besides what i've already come up with?

i thought about that, but it's running just fine(no stumbling or loss of power), just making a clattering form the top end, which i'm thinking is being caused by the contaminated oil

i'm gonna go over there and check it out shortly and change the oil and inspect it, see if the noise goes away

if the sound stops, i don't think it's a timing issue

at that point, i think i can just pull the fuel rail, then prime the pump by turning the key on and off a couple times and look for dribbling, right?

If the oil truly smells like gas, then the engine is flooding somehow.

Seriously doubt timing could be a cause, because it'd have to be so far off that the engine would run like ass to get that much gas in the oil.

Stuck injector, or some other concern that is causing the PCM to flood is the likely culprit.

edit: I was thinking about ignition timing.....cam timing could cause this.

oil definitely smells like fuel, after dropping some fresh oil in there it sounds normal and is running fine, so timing isn't the issue

gonna pull the fuel rail tomorrow when i can see what i'm doing and hunt for leaky injectors

the local parts houses want $200 per injector, if i determine that it is indeed an injector issue, anyone see any reason why i can't just pick up one or more of these?

Could be really bad rings, problematic injectors..

Is it warming up properly? A stuck open thermostat will cause the motor to run too cool which will make it run rich which causes fuel in oil.. phew.

Check Rock Auto for reman injectors.

does the truck make tons of short trips, never getting to operating temp? rich mixture + cold engine = fuel washing down the cylinder walls into your sump.

When was the last oil change? Do a leak down test.

Leak down test or compression test to see any cylinder is boned. If you have gas in the oil you have a problem. Changing injectors isn't going to fix it. If an injector was stuck dumping fuel, the car would have other problems other than being noisy. It would have driveability problems and the CEL should be coming on.

Indeed.
About the only other way to get fuel in the oil is a failing mechanical pump leaking through on the backside, and I doubt this has a mechanical pump.

When was the last oil change? Do a leak down test.

500 miles ago by me, it was fine then...haven't had a chance to look at it yet, going to check it out tonight
