Fuel Pump replacement question

GF has a Mercury Sable that doesnt want to start anymore..
Family members happen to be mechanically inclined, and determined the Fuel Pump needs to be replaced.

how much are we looking at?

About $100 give or take for the pump. 1-2 hours if you can get to it under the rear seat, to about a day if you have to drop the tank.

Year, Make, and Model plus otions like engine size/dual tank/special edition/etc...



But most if not all Sables you will need to drop the tank. Being FWD it is not to bad unless the tank is full. Which most pumps break when it is near full.

Go to Advance or AZ and see how much a new pump is. Don't forget to replace the fuel filter at the same time.

Just had the fuel pump on my silverado changed. Today. They had to drop the tank because of the Reading bed on it.

FWIW, just the pump was $500 or so alone.

$715 later. Ouchies.

The pump in a 1994 Dodge Dakota V8 is about $320. Dropping the tank sucks in a car. It is possible that you could get to the tank under the rear seat. My wife's '99 Escort was designed so you could remove the rear seat cushion to get to it. I don't know anything about the Taurus/Sable.

But before you do anything, go get a fuel pressure gauge and connect it to the fuel port on the fuel rail. Turn the key to the "on" position without starting it and see if the pump builds pressure. If not, then check the fuel pump relay (swap it with another relay of the same part number... there will be several of the same in the under-the-hood fusebox.)

If no pressure then the pump probably is bad.

I had to get the fuel lines in my '92 Mercury Cougar replaced. They had to drop the tank. I think it was $140 for the lines and $260 for the labor, so $400 total.
