and your burner is ..?

Howdy Scrappy!!! Congrats on the Lifer status!! When did that happen?

Question about the Made in Taiwan or Japan. Are you finding this out after you use DVDinfo/identifier or is it somewhere on the package that you can see before you buy it?

Not to mention the discs themselves say Made in Japan right on the top surface.

i've learned my lesson with cheapo media. I will never buy the cheep stuff when the good stuff is readily available for a reasonable price.

i bought 200 +R made in japan last time, and they're perfect.

I don't have to have TY, but I don't buy the cheap crap either. I usually buy the Ritek +R's for around .26¢-.30¢ ea. I haven't seen a deal on them lately though and I need more, so I'll pay a little extra for these and try them out. I liked the TY's for CDR's and don't expect anything less from these.

BTW.. Thanks for the tip on whether these are made in Japan or not. I never looked at the package that closely and didn't know that it meant that the actual media was manufactured in the country on the packaging. It's possible that they could make the media some place else and then package it in another country, isn't it?

I was wondering what brand these new Fujis were, and knew to come to the forums here for the answer ... thanks folks

I bought a 50-pack each of 4/8X Fujis Black Friday of 04 ($13.99 per spindle), and those have been tremendously reliable burning at all the max rated speeds across my three burners - Ancient Pioneer 105, NEC 2500 adn the Pioneer A08 in my Humax TiVo DRT800 DVD burner! Worth it, even at 40c per! Especilly with a load of Rewardz coupons to burn through

Now I don't need to bother to figure out what brand the MicroCenter specials (Philips 8X DVD-R and Verbatim 8X DVD+R) were - same price, but not Fujis!

: any good reasons to get the "+" instead of the "-" ?

I prefer -R's, since they are the standard format of the DVD Forum folks (they have the official DVD logo on them). +R's were created by corporations because they didn't want to pay license fees to those folk. As for compatibility and performance (data/video), they are pretty much even, though -R's may hold a slight edge since they are readable on older drives/players (Ie., I had to update the firmware on my DVD-ROM to read +R's). Plus, there is always the chance that the corps will just abandon the format altogether....

Read here for lots more info about differences between -/+R media.

Anyways, its always great to see Best Buy selling Fuji 50pack DVD-/+R for $20. Check the labels! Made in Japan are always Taiyo Yudens from Fuji. You can always goto www.rima.com to buy unbranded TY's at a very affordable price.

I believe the TY media code for 8x is "TYG02".

The first dvd drive that I bought was a combo unit that did both +/-, so it didn't matter. I got in the habit of buying the +R's because that's usually what was on sale. There were more deals with +R media. Since I've been using +R media, I'm tending to stick with it because if it aint broke.... I've never had any compatibility issues with any dvd players yet with +R, so that's why I use it.

I went to my BB B&M today and picked up two 50 packs of +R Fuji's @$19.99ea. Both are made in Japan, so I'm set for a while.

And thats what really matters! There really is nothing (yet) that puts one over the other, just personal preference. I have both and tend to buy whats cheaper (as long as its a certain brand). But if its the same price, I'll go -R

Same here. I'll buy whatever is cheaper, but is still good media. If they are the same price, I'll opt for the +R because of my excellent experience with +R media.

I really do hate Fuji's packaging though. I'm glad that I kept some empty spindles that slide lock.
