So far I like mine pretty well. I picked it up from Digital Foto Club for around $340 shipped. I need to take more pictures with it before I can make a determination.

I would like either this one or the Minolta Z1. I have the Minolta S414 now and my wife said not to sell it because it is a nice camera. Of course I just walked away shaking my head!

If I remember correctly the size of the Z1 it's significantly larger and is more awkward than the Fuji. I speculate it has a slightly better picture than the S5000 and the XD cards aren't going to reduce in price any time soon to my knowledge. I picked 2 x 256 cards at Sam's Club for $180. Considering you can pick up CF for less than half of that it is substancial difference. But for $350 it's a nice little camera with a kick arse zoom. I found the zoom to work pretty well with little blur regardless of some of the reviews that have said otherwise.

I think Z1 is better.
Z1 have more manual features and cleaner picture compare to S5000.
Although S5000 definately look better.

speaking of xD cards, is there a reason manufacturers are using them? how are they different that compact flash and the rest of the gang?

This camera is available for $299 + $14.95 Ship at inoax.com

There is a review of it here Steve's Digicams

It seems like a pretty good deal. Does anyone else have this camera? Is it well made? It seems like a zoom that big would be prone to damage from sand or dirt.

steves digicams kicks butt. dpreview.com is good too.

and what do you mean prone to sand and dirt? How would the rest of the camera be less prone to distruction?

Anyway, its my first REAL digital camera, so I can't wait to use it. *rubbs hands together hastely*

Think of xD cards as "next-generation CompactFlash". It's "dumb" memory, like compactflash, but it's much smaller and much faster. Eventually, xD should be cheaper than SD, MMC, etc. much like CF is now.

Also purchased Fujifilm S5000 a few weeks ago and have seen the price drop $25. Have taken a bunch of swimteam and football pics and have been very satisfied with my purchase. Picture quality has been excellent. Using max zoom requires tripod or support.

What I was worried about were the sliding tubes of the zoom lens...they can stick if dirt or dust gets into them. But I see that this camera has a lens adaper and all you need is a clear filter and it seals the zoom up. That's a great feature and very important for beach use

This looks like a nice camera at that price, can you zoom with turning the lens, or do you have to press a button?

Newegg is the best rated. If you pick and choose, you can find a very good price from a company with an equal or close to equal rating for the Fujifilm S5000.

I have been looking at the Toshiba M700. It has a 10x Canon zoom and has gotten good reviews. It also has a wireless remote.

Your wife was right. The S414 takes better pics.

xD is just an expensive, proprietary format, just like Sony's memory sticks. Only Olympus and Fuji use it. Don't expect your next-generation palm devices to use xD.

Stick to Secure Digital and Compact Flash if given the choice, they are the standard formats. SD for smaller devices.

um, yeah. stick to SD and CF? well, you know, what if you want to buy a camera from olympus and fuji? you just don't buy it?

haha, i mean, you can say stick to sd and cf but it doesn't really mean anything. it's such a useless statement. unless you choose your camera based on the media, for which i think its pointless

That's why I said, "If given the choice."

If you like two cameras equally, and one uses either CF or SD, get that one. You also have to think about the fact that the camera that uses CF or SD will be cheaper in the end, since the media will be cheaper than if you get another one. It's not that hard to understand.
