I have a desktop PC running Windows 7. It is no longer used for computing because I do eveything on my laptop. I've started using the desktop as an NAS device. In addition to the boot drive there are two internal drives and two external USB drives for data storage. The system is on my wireless network with two laptops.
I have two issues I'm trying to resolve:
  1. I want to have full access to manage the NAS data drives from my laptop. Currently I can read and write to the data drives but there are some folders and files that I do not have full access to so cannot delete them.
  2. I want to set up Admin prvileges for the NAS sysem so I can manage it from my laptop.
What I need to do to set this access up?
Thanks

You should upgrade your Windows 7 to Windows 10 since this computer sits on your network.

Then you should right click on the drives (individually) you want to share and click the Sharing tab. Then click on Advanced Sharing and share your drives giving the appropriate permissions.

That's what I do when I want to share a disk (or folder) from a Windows system. And it is not a NAS system.

The system is at least 15 years old. Since it is not used for any actual computing and does everything I ask of it, what benefit is there to upgrading to 10?
I have set the permissions and security on the drives but still get a “you do not have permission” error on some files. I’ll recheck the settings.

Maybe I’m using the term “NAS” loosely. What is the difference between an “NAS” device and a PC that is only used to make the drives available to other computers on the network?

As for "administration" of the shares, that has to be done server-side, the SMB protocol doesn't deal with file-system permissions (at least, as far as administration of shares goes), that I know of.

Look into MS RDP (Remote Desktop), if your server is running a "Pro" edition of Win7 or Win10, or use TeamViewer, and set up a persistent connection/login, or possibly something more "free", like UltraVNC or one of the free VNCs. (They all derive from open-source code, AFAIK.)

I think that you can make this work, if you work hard enough at it. Too bad MS dropped "Home Server" as a product, IMHO, it's a really niche, but also needed, product line.

Windows 7 is a possible security risk, that's the only reason.

Not really much difference, your Windows 7 computer acts as a file server now. You should also consider replacing it with a real NAS, burns less power. (That is if you have the spare cash)

I thought about buying a real NAS but then figured if I have this perfectly good PC I’ll just use that. Saves some cash and prevents buying another item that will eventually have to be recycled.

I planned on looking into Remote Desktop to do what I wanted. Honestly though, the most efficient, cost effective, and sensible way to do this is to just get off my butt and go upstairs to the desktop when I need to. Plenty of time to do that now that we’re all self- quarantining.

As for the windows 7 security risk, can that be solved by not allowing the system access to the internet?

If what you want is disk access, it's easier by sharing the disks, you need more work to log in to Windows 7 and then access the disks.

Better keep it out of the internet and make sure you have the firewall enabled in your modem.
