Full Metal Jacket - What a stupid movie

I am actually confused.

I don't know if this movie sucked or if I think it sucked because I have already watched other great movies about war such as Saving Private Ryan.

I am still trying to tie the first 45 minutes of the movie to the rest of it. The bootcamp scenes were great, Vietnam sucked although the scenery was pretty good.

SPOILER - I even thought that the Fatboy (Vincent D'Onofrio) was the main character in the movie until he shot himself.

I don't think this movie was good. I guess I was expecting another SPR.

I thought it was a great movie!
Its good to be reminded of how our troops gave the ultimate sacrifice for not just out freedom but for another countries freedom. I wish all the vets a happy 4th today.

Read the book it might help it was called 'the short timers' I believe.
The movie was very good as few movies till then gave a truer look at what vietnam was like. You gotta remember thats a 20 yr old film.
Till then the best movies about Vietnam were Apocolypse now and The Deerhunter.

It was way better than Saving Private Ryan since none of the previews for Saving Private Ryan made me want to see it.

I used to just love the boot camp stuff, but now the more I watch the vietnam stuff, the better that part is. It's much more subtle than the in your face sarcasm/humor of boot camp.

that's the problem with speilberg, he feels he has to talk down to his audience by showing everything. kubrick treats the viewer with more respect and allows the viewer to think for themselves.

Duckers - the fact that you went into the movie with HUGE preconceived notions ( that as a respected war movie it must be like SPR in the jungle) is your problem.

Yes it is a war movie, but it is so much more so. It is more of a novel and has more character development that most war movies. The movie chronicles the rise to manhood - 60's Marine style.

I don't think it was dumbed down...it's not a complex script to begin with. There wasn't some hidden meaning behind SPR, it was just a story.

20 year old movie?!?! Naaaw, I'm not that old. It came out when I was in basic training in 1987. (screams) OMFG that was 14 years ago!!!

FMJ was just as much about the hardening up of a man during that period of life as it was about Vietnam itself. The basic training pictured in that movie was tame when compared to the reality of war. That's what the movie was half about. It was half preparation for dealing with war and half straight dealing with the realities of war. Nowadays most of the drill seargeants can't even use profanity toward you. Today's armed forces are supposed to be a &quot;smarter, more advanced&quot; type of warrior while back in Vietnam everything was basically done by brute force. From bombing to dogfighting to patroling the perimeter, it was pretty much all brute force compared to today's technology (smart weapon) laden military.
