Expecting another SPR?

I'd rank Platoon, Glory, and Full Metal Jacket above SPR (which was of course, a great movie).

Maybe you just "don't get it"?

Did you really expect to get it? As stated before, it is Stanley Kubrick's movie.

Speaking of Glory, that is one of the most under-appreciated war movies ever. Denzel Washington is great.

FMJ is one of the best war movies ever made.

SPR and Platoon are right up there also.

'Drop your cocks and grab your socks!'

FMJ is exactly the way I would envision Vietnam: Scary as hell, confusing, adrenaline pumping, insanely stupid (the war not the movie), and awe inspiring. WWII was a pretty straightforward war while VN was everything but. The only way a GI was going to survive this war was to trust his fellow GI's COMPLETELY and work as a TEAM. That is what I believe Kubrick was trying to convey and was more than successful at doing so. Kubrick hit EVERY emotion right on the head....not so much with words but with body language. The first time I watched this movie I thought it was kind of 'funny'. The second and third times I thought it was completely serious. Viewings 4-10+ picked up something more each time and continue to do so.

This is a MUST SEE for anyone who is interested in VN....but...it's kinda like PINK FLOYD's THE WALL...you GOTTA see it MANY times to 'get it'.

Let's make this clear, I did not mean to offend anyone. If you think FMJ is the best war movie ever made, then I respect your opinion.

I think part of the reason I did not like FMJ as much as other movies I have watched is because I don't think it was deep enough. Again, this movie is like 15 years old and I just happened to watch it for the first time a couple of days ago.

In SPR every soldier seemed more human, with more emotions, they were scared. FMJ was different, it is not the kind of movie that will make any difference in the way I view the world, it's the kind of movie I will forget in a couple of months.

And don't get me wrong, I liked FMJ, the first 45 minutes in the bootcamp.

While I don't base my opinions on what the critics say, I would like to mention that Roger Ebert gave SPR 4 stars, while he gave FMJ only 2 1/2.

ummm sure - that's why you used the flame bait topic title "FMJ - what a stupid movie"

<< I think part of the reason I did not like FMJ as much as other movies I have watched is because I don't think it was deep enough. Again, this movie is like 15 years old and I just happened to watch it for the first time a couple of days ago. >>

I am dying for you to explain what "deep" means. The movie is great on so many levels

<< In SPR every soldier seemed more human, with more emotions, they were scared. FMJ was different, it is not the kind of movie that will make any difference in the way I view the world, it's the kind of movie I will forget in a couple of months. >>

I like your simplification: "with more emotions, they were scared." Almost the entire movie takes place in heavy combat, what did you expect? And frankly, that was about the only emotion other than the male version of empathy when they saw another guy cry and left him alone...

<< And don't get me wrong, I liked FMJ, the first 45 minutes in the bootcamp. >>

Me too

<< While I don't base my opinions on what the critics say, I would like to mention that Roger Ebert gave SPR 4 stars, while he gave FMJ only 2 1/2. >>

Why do you want to mention it then? Roger Ebert is the biggest spielberg whore on the planet. He has less journalistic integrity than the guy Sony invented.

And by the way, why is it that when someone doesn't like a movie, someone else claims that it is because s/he didn't understand it?

My nephew went to the Marines a couple of weeks ago, he is also in Parris Island, SC.

I wonder what it is like. I'll rent FMJ when he comes back

FMJ was definetely one of the best war movies of all time. It was actually funny(we love you long time)-yet disturbing at the same time(when soldier shoots the sarge).

I think you should watch it again and pay attention. Maybe you will understand the forces behind great movies...

FMJ is one of my favorites. The closest depiction Ive ever seen of Basic Training although I never saw a TI or DI hit a recruit. I was only in the AF though so what do I know? Well, at least the language in boot was the same. I was always in trouble for laughing at the TI. Best part of boot.

Nobody mentioned the "Alabama Black Snake" though.

Someone mentioned "Glory" That was a great flick also.

Check out this trivia about R. Lee Ermey (the drill instructor) from the internet movie database:

Former US Marines Drill Instructor R. Lee Ermey was hired as a consultant on how to drill USMC style. He performed a demonstration on videotape in which he yelled obscene insults and abuse non-stop for fifteen minutes without stopping, repeating himself, or even flinching - despite being continuously pelted with tennis balls and oranges. Director Stanley Kubrick was so impressed that he cast Ermey as Sgt. Hartmann.

R. Lee Ermey hardly blinks at all in any scene.

Ermey was involved in a jeep accident during the making of the movie. At 1am he skidded off the road, breaking all of his ribs on one side. He refused to pass out, and kept flashing his car lights until a motorist stopped. In some scenes, he does not move one of his arms at all.

Man! Talk about tough!!!
