I'm thinking about attending Full Sail in about a year or so for their new Bachelor's program in Digital Design and Media. Has anyone heard of this school? Good or bad things? The degree program is a little unusual. It's a year round school and the Bachelors is obtained in 21 months. The tuition is 58k and this doesn't include housing/food etc.. Just courses, books and labs.

If you have attended this school or heard anything about it I would be interested in hearing from you. Or any opinions on spending 58k for a bachelor's in Digital Media and Design.

I signed up for their mailing list 5! years ago and still get crap from them almost every month. I think they should get the point that I decided to get my degree somewhere else. They also called my house twice. I think its a cult.

Can't be worth it. I'll take my $0 tuition thanks.

Isn't it 58k a year or semester? Not for the whole program?

From what I hear Full Sail is a legitimate crock of sh*t. Not many people that have went there (and ive talked to about 5 or so) actually enjoyed it. Its like the ITT of digital graphics schools. They claim their job placement is ridiculous but they're pretty much the laughing stock of the whole industry.

I highly recommend you take your money elsewhere to an accredited university with a more renound program.

I can not speak for the quality of education there or the job prospects. However, you should know that they are nationally accredited, as opposed to regionally accredited.

Now, both forms of accreditation are legally* equal, but in practice you're going to find regional accreditation to be far superior. Any traditional college or university (read: with a campus and not for-profit) is going to be regionally accredited.

The vast majority of such regionally accredited schools will not accept a nationally accredited degree as valid. The ones that will can be counted in the low hundreds. You can sometimes override these policies by doing such things as receiving a special exception from the dean. But overall, if you go on to get a Masters, your options will be very limited.

* Some professional licenses, such as the CPA, still discriminate against national accreditation even though both types are equal to the federal government.

One of my best friends goes to the Institute for Advancing Technology, in Arizona. He tells me that Full Sail isn't as high-calibre as his school, and that he knows a lot of people who transferred to his school from Full Sail.

He also said, twice, that most kids he's met who go to full sail are douchebags.

Whoops, didn't make it clear that IAT is also a graphical design specialty school.

They came to my gf's school last week and gave a presentation to her class. She said some of the projects they've worked on are pretty impressive, and they seemed legit.

I went to visit it 2 years ago, and did a bunch of looking into it. I can try to answer any questions you have. It's very expensive, but the school is very nice. I looked into doing the Game Design degree but realized it was a waste. Too much money to be gambling with to not be sure if I could find a decent job. I ended up deciding to return to college to finish up my CS degree.

There are a lot of douchebags in the Full Sail degrees. Especially the game design one. Mostly because there are a lot of 18-19 year old kids who convince mommy and daddy to throw down all that cash so they could program Diablo 3. That degree thins out very quickly after a few classes.

I had always wanted to go to Digipen, but I was much too broke to do that. If you have the money and are seriously looking one of them places, then I'd look elsewhere. I'm sure there are other ones that are much more respected and just as good.

If you want some advice from someone who's lived it:

Unless you're going to go to NYU, USC or UCLA film school don't waste your time. Move to LA or NY, get a job on the ground floor and work your way up. You'll be happier when you don't feel like you paid a bunch of money for an education you could've gotten on the job with some hard work.

Film school? I didn't say I was going to film school. From what I hear Full Sail is an aweful film school, I already know that....

Took a look at them but decided not to go. I know a few people who went there but they really didn't do anything on advertising. RISD, Parsons, and School of Visual Arts were my last 3 choices and SVA was the only one that really put you into advertising/design.

I just see their stuff in some magazines, but that's it. All in all, there are better ones from what I heard in Ca and the northeast.

Check into SCAD, Savanah College of Art & Design. It is a legit, and extremely respected school. It ranks up there with RISD, Rhode Island School of Design. These are two of the top art and design schools, both have steller digital design and animation programs. SCAD also has a game design program.

It doesn't matter. You want to get into a field where a degree means fvck all. I still stand by my advice. Move to LA or NY, get a job in the part of "digital design" that you want to work in at the ground floor and work your way up.

The only thing going to a school like that will get you is some nice student loans to pay off for the next 15 years.
