Well here you go:

#1. When I start my computer (Win 98) I get an error about the registry and some file being missing. It then says C:\Progra~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386. If I press a key I can continue. It started right I uninstalled Norton for the fourth time. How do stop this from happening?

#2. Every time I restart my computer it says that hpodev07 will be shut down. WTF is that?

#3. If I try to use HP's auto detect or when I tried to use Norton's Fiix it tool it said something to the effect of:
  1. 1. You clicked no on the previous button
    the internet conection was interrupted
    2. Your internet security options are set to disable downloading or scripting of activeX components
    3. blah blah blah

Problem is that I have all settings set to enable because I have tried everything else. No virus because I show a clean Hijack This log. Ad-Aware, Sbybot, Avast all come up negative.

Help

format and reinstall fixes those problems.... yea it's a pain in the ass, but with older versions of Windows you just have to do it every so often. With Win XP you don't have to so much, but I actually still reload my system from time to time.

Step 1. Delete all HP and Symantec software
Step 2. Install Windows 98 OVER the old install. Yes. :Q Just put in the cd (select cd as first boot device in BIOS, first), and install the install on the drive your original install was one .
Step 3. Reinstall the software
Step 4. ????
Step 5. Paypal Vegitto $20.

Start>>Regedit

Search "Symantec"

Delete EVERY occurance of that word. Norton problem fixed.

check the startup for hpodev07. Do a search on the registry before hand as well...

PS - Upgrade your Operating System.
PPS - Backup your registry before doing anything in there.

1: Install Linux. It's free.
2: There is no step 2.

Linux rivals or betters the newest versions of windows in nearly all areas of functionality, but unlike them, it will run great on an old PC.

Windows 98 is a 32 bit extention to a 16 bit shell for an 8 bit operating system written for a 4 bit machine by a 2 bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.

The Symevent error is probably a reference left in your system.ini file, not the registry. Check there (and win.ini) and remove it from the devices section.

Theres no reason a little housecleaning cant help him.

HOWEVER, I would recommend such a machine stear clear of the internet. Most of the modern AV and spyware cleaners wont do their best work.

hpodev07 im willing to bet is the name of your computer. your os install is obviously corrupt and the only way to fix that is to reinstall it. like everyone else is saying, your better off upgrading. old OS's have security flaws and arent supported by Microsoft anymore.

It's not helpful to come in here and guess (espeically when you are wrong). That is an HP component, part of a printer driver.
