This is similar to another post made today by someone else. I now have a spare wireless-b router and a spare computer. I was thinking of setting up an open LAN in my neighborhood. Maybe half a dozen houses would be in range. I know right now I can see my wireless and another LAN on air. Both are encrypted. I thought it might be fun to have something people can drop in on. I will not be offering access to my broadband or my main net. I want to remain anonymous.
What are some fun things I could do? Possibilities are some kind of streaming audio (my favorite songs 24 -hours a day) or video (Red Dwarf anyone?), web cam (maybe a sky cam, pointed straight up), freeware server (not pirate server!), neighborhood bulletin board, whatever. Suggestions?
In the long run, what would be really nifty is having a peer-to-peer network/gateway of many routers until the whole neighborhood was covered. Something like a town rec center/meeting hall, but run by many and not dependent on any one machine.
Actually, now it occurs to me that this may be happening elsewhere already. Any pointers?
