my nephews are 5 and 7 and whenever i play with them or babysit them i always tell them if they don't behave or if they don't start being nicer to me i am goign to buy them barbies for christmas.
then whenever barbie commercials come on tv i always say "oh look, it's your favorite toy" and they get angry and start screaming about how they aren't girls and how they hate barbies and what not.

so i'm thinking for christmas of getting some cheap barbie-esk dolls from the dollar store and wrapping them up and giving them to them for christmas and then wehn they get mad i will pretend to cry because they don't like my present and say things like "well you make such a fuss about it whenever we see them on tv..." (well try to, i'll probabley be laughing too hard at their reactions).

then hours later after christms dinner just before they leave i'll bring out their real presents.

anyways, is this unnecessarily mean and am i going to scar them for life?

((i am laughing right now cuz i can so picture them screaming and throwing the barbies at me and ripping the heads off them and stuff.))

They're little kids, not your college age friends. Just give them gifts on Christmas morning like normal.

I think that is funny and cute, just as long as you have something good for them afterwards!!!

I like your idea, even if it is mean. My 5 and 9 year old would have a fricken cow if I did this to them. Knowing that, I will. Boy this Christmas is going to be fun.

No, get them something they would like, take it out and put a barbie doll inside the package. They will get all excited, open it up and find the barbie doll. You can say "I knew you would rather have that". As soon as they start to stare at you, and they will, give them the real present that was supposed to be in the box. If you wait too long it will be cruel at that age.

Just my opinion.

what if they like them?

(see "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert")

just kidding... by all means do it, that will be a potentially valuable lesson in life.

You guys realzie this will be funny, but then having the kids moping around being mad at you all day will likely ruin the whole day, at which point everyone is miserable and no one thinks it's funny anymore?

If they were a little older, I think it would be more appropriate. Like early teens. But at 5 years old, you are defiling all that is holy to them - giving crappy christmas presents! Even if you do make better later on in the evening.

If you really want to f*ck with them, give them the Barbies and say they're from Santa.

For a birthday present one year I give my neighbors kid, 11 at the time, a Barbie. We all had a good laugh no big deal. Then for my sons birthday, 6, then did the same. He went out of the room crying and stopped going to their house. It was fun to watch though!!!

I think they would be too young to appreciate the humor behind this. I don't think they are emotionally capable at that age to handle such a joke. Maybe when they are older and know it's a joke?

At that age you'd just be reinforcing gender stereotypes. They probably wouldn't get the joke (it's pretty obvious the don't), and I think they'd not forget it, although the would get over it.

No, I wouldn't do it personally. Maybe if you put the Barbie with the gift as a joke, but they are only little kids and it is Christmas....I don't think they, or their parents, would appreciate it!

my mum bought them the best presents they are these remote control army trucks that shoot missles and are in my opinon "so cool!" so i know they won't be all sad and mopey all day

most likely they will start screaming at me "we're not girls you know" and then the younger one will take the barbie out and pretend to play with it while breaking the arms and legs and head off it then throwing the pieces at me while saying "opps, opps, opps"
((they did that to a couple of dolls i have ))

i tried to defeat gender stereotypes by giving them some of my old stuff to play with and they destroyed them while laughing at me

they are evil.

edit: you know what else they did? they took this really expensive teddy bear someone bought for me from my room and then were like "wow, this is realy nice aunt kat, can we play with it?" and i was like okay.
5 minutes later they call me into the kitchen where they are feeding it to my dog telling her to destroy it.

Yeah, based on your post prior to this one, it sounds like they have already had their masculinity pre-defined for them. Oh well. Can't save all of them, and society survived for thousands of years before the concept of gender stereotypes emerged
