I was at Fry's on Wednesday searching for a new video card because my 6600GT blew up the other day. I was standing in front of all the cards (which were less than spectacular) when an old man walks up to me, had to be late 50's early 60's and says, "excuse me, do you happen to know what the best video card is? My son loves playing games and I am known to dabble once in a while." Using my anandtech analysis I questioned him, "Well sir, what kind of games do you play and what is your motherboard type?" He replies, very thorough, "I have an ASUS motherboard with two PCIe lanes containing an AMD processor clocked at 2.0GHz paired with 2, 1GB sticks of ram. My son likes the Counter-Strike type games and I am more into the new Elder Scrolls game." Since reading the latest news on video cards from anand, knowing ATi in the single card solution BARELY has an edge on the 7900 series (talking 2-5 FPS in games, not even noticeable) and knowing that those two engines seem to run better on ATi hardware, I replied as professional as I could since he was no man to be taken advantage of, "Well sir, seems as though ATi has a stronger solution this round unless you plan to use 2 cards, then I would recommend Nvidia." He paused a moment, scanning the rows of cards, "Well son, I am sorry to disappoint but I will never use an ATi card again. The horrible performance from every generation and now the amount of software you have to load on it these days, your better off selling your soul to the devil. Maybe it is just me, but when you've run a business all your life, you stick to what works best." I turned to my girl friend and said, "Well, that's that love, lets get the hell outta here." Shook the mans hand, wished him a good day, gently kissed the girl, took her hand and headed out the door.

I ended up buying a 7900GT since I have never had problems with Nvidia and couldn't be more happy.

Anyways, cheers, good luck to all those out there with your new video card purchases. This only comes around every blue moon for me (ugh 15 months to be exact), so the new purchase was a special one...

AEG's marketing practices have taken a hit I see. Next they'll be claiming ATI has cooties.

Its not a funny story, it happens all the time. For whatever reason, the average Joe does not know how to install ATI drivers.

I'm about to laugh any minute now. I can feel it. Any minute now.

I think this goes more to show the perception of Joe Gamer on video cards than anything. ATI has been neck and neck (give or take some cards) with nVidia for most of the last 3-4 years and yet Joe Gamer still thinks ATI makes inferior products.

I never installed anything on ATI other than the graphics adapter and I have no problem running it...I guess sometimes people just don't learn and they just accepted the fact lolz. I'm not gonna be bias but I can agree with the guy that the nvidia graphics driver (not the separate softwares concoction ala ATI Catalyst dashboard) comes complete and runs much more stable than ATI remix. However, sometimes we don't really need the mumbo jumbo that comes with the software. We just need the graphics to run. With that said, ATI driver does the job very well.

just my two cents...

Having used both ATI & Nvidia cards, in fact alternating in my last four systems (Ti4600/9800Pro/6800GT/X1900XTX) I have to say that the choice should be made based on the games you like to play, however I like many here think nothing of blowing Windows away for a fresh install & the average user will never do this, so for the average user Nvidia is a safer, if not always faster choice because installing/upgrading drivers is far easier then with ATI. In fairness the only time I've had a problem myself has been going from Nvidia to ATI or the reverse.

What an idiot.

ATI sucks every generation. LOL You can bet the Radeon 9700 was licking the boots of Nvidia's FX series, huh? But that's not the point. The point is this story sucks.

I dont think it sucked. It sort of illustrated what the general public think toward the GPU industry.

yeah its funny,
funny how the guy said how horrible is ati's performance in all their generations and stating hed be better off selling his soul to the devil than buying an ati card as if he really knew what he was talking about, and yet started by asking what is the best video card.

He probably drove a Buick also. As people get older they get more and more stuck in their ways and fixed on a certain way of perception. Heck even we get annoyed with a product if we have a bad experience with it.

If he's used an ATI product in the last 5 years and had such problems, then I'm sure it's a PEBKAC.

But you can't go wrong with a Nvidia 7900 series card (who are we kidding: the 7900 GT. The GTX is overpriced and a waste of money to 99% of us).
