I was at Fry's on Wednesday searching for a new video card because my 6600GT blew up the other day. I was standing in front of all the cards (which were less than spectacular) when an old man walks up to me, had to be late 50's early 60's and says, "excuse me, do you happen to know what the best video card is? My son loves playing games and I am known to dabble once in a while." Using my anandtech analysis I questioned him, "Well sir, what kind of games do you play and what is your motherboard type?" He replies, very thorough, "I have an ASUS motherboard with two PCIe lanes containing an AMD processor clocked at 2.0GHz paired with 2, 1GB sticks of ram. My son likes the Counter-Strike type games and I am more into the new Elder Scrolls game." Since reading the latest news on video cards from anand, knowing ATi in the single card solution BARELY has an edge on the 7900 series (talking 2-5 FPS in games, not even noticeable) and knowing that those two engines seem to run better on ATi hardware, I replied as professional as I could since he was no man to be taken advantage of, "Well sir, seems as though ATi has a stronger solution this round unless you plan to use 2 cards, then I would recommend Nvidia." He paused a moment, scanning the rows of cards, "Well son, I am sorry to disappoint but I will never use an ATi card again. The horrible performance from every generation and now the amount of software you have to load on it these days, your better off selling your soul to the devil. Maybe it is just me, but when you've run a business all your life, you stick to what works best." I turned to my girl friend and said, "Well, that's that love, lets get the hell outta here." Shook the mans hand, wished him a good day, gently kissed the girl, took her hand and headed out the door.
I ended up buying a 7900GT since I have never had problems with Nvidia and couldn't be more happy.
Anyways, cheers, good luck to all those out there with your new video card purchases. This only comes around every blue moon for me (ugh 15 months to be exact), so the new purchase was a special one...
