Fury X at $440 a good buy?

-Already have a Freesync monitor
-Recently relinquished CF selling one of my 290s before Polaris launch
-Can sell my other 290 for ~160 making the total upgrade cost 280
-Looks like I would get about 30% more FPS at 1440p in most titles
-Predicting Vega performance which is 6 to 7 months out is difficult, I assume they'll have a part around the $400-450 range but I don't necessarily expect that model to be better than Fury X with the exception being amount of VRAM.
-I don't think the VRAM issue is that large at 1440p, with only 30% more frames than my current card I think in most situations the card runs out of steam before VRAM and I am not worried about Hyper modes.
-Currently using a 2500k, will upgrade once Zen releases to either 6700k, 6850k or Zen depending on prices and performance at that time.

Is this a fair price at $440 AR?

Option 2 would be to sell my brand new monitor (BenQ xl2730z which I love) at a loss and replace it with a Dell S27*** which is basically the Gsync equivalent and get a 1070 or 1080. However that option is going to be much more expensive and then I have to hope once again that I get a good monitor on the first purchase (no dead pixels, very little backlight bleed) which I honestly hate buying monitors because of the return policies on them and there is no Microcenter or Frys in my area.

Option 3 I was considering but is also the most expensive option. I can keep the BenQ AND buy the Dell then I have two 1440p 144hz async monitors one from each camp and I can buy any card I please switching which monitor is my primary based on the card I purchased that round. However, very difficult to justify that and it would likely eat into my CPU budget.

Option 1 - total cost to me $440-160=$280 for Fury X + 30% FPS

Option 2 - total cost to me $530+420-160-350=$440 for Dell monitor and 1070 + ~40% FPS? Also the added issue of selling a monitor and winning the monitor lottery

Option 3 - total cost to me $530+420-160=$810 for Dell monitor and 1070 + ~40 FPS. May delay upgrade of other rig parts or I may have to make compromises however I would now not be "locked" into a camp.

Option 4 - wait 6 to 7 months for Vega to release

Dear Nvidia, if you supported Freesync I would purchase one of your overpriced cards immediately.

With you already having a freesync display, AMD would be the more cost effective way to go.

If you can wait for Vega, do it. But full blown fury with its AIO cooler is not bad for $440 if you need it now.

No point paying $440 for a 4GB card in 2016. Wait for a better card from AMD or go the Nvidia way.

Isn't the 1070 faster around the same price? It's what I'd buy in that price range right now anyways and I'm more a team red guy.

OP has a Free-sync monitor, so he won't get to use that feature if he buys a 1070.

Quite the conundrum, not even sure what I would do... Probably wait it out until Vega next year.

A gtx 1070 is much better then a fury x, if you can find a custom one with decent price is the one to get...

Ahhh. But with a 1070 at qhd he's more likely to be in the ULMB(or benq motion blur reduction in this case I guess) is more useful than freesync range anyways. If he were at 4k....

Option 4. Just wait it out. Im in the same boat, minus the freesync, and I'm just going to wait and reduce settings in titles that don't work with CF

If the Op is using Dual-Link DVI, and runs at a refresh of over 81Hz, that means no 1070 or 1080 (currently). As they have that nasty bug of showing nice pretty color bars on boot. But if he can use display port, than its not an issue.

and As far as I know, there are no Fury X with DVI ports...so why would he use DVI when his monitor has Displayport?

Was just making sure, in case he goes the 1070/1080 route. Didn't have time to look up specs on the monitor.

I'm pretty sure the Freesync only works over DP.

OP, I'm facing the same problem as you.
I have the same monitor with a 290x.

My plan is to wait as long as I can until Vega/Titan.
However, I'm going to get a Vive "soon".
If I can't get the performance I want out of the 290x for that, I'll most likely just get a 1080.
I don't think I'll sell the monitor, regardless.

meh, buy a 480 to tie you over and upgrade to vega later. and you can sell your 480 for not much less when vaga comes out.

This is true, I do like the MBR feature on the monitor and I use it for some games. I do use Freesync as well though for games like GTAV (games where I am not getting over 100 fps at 1440p) and Dark Souls (games that are unfortunately limited to 60 fps.)

If I switch back to Green Team I am going to go all in and get the a monitor with G-sync. I do like Async for the above situations.

The card is new, sorry for the confusion on that. I would only even consider buying a used card from someone with a lot of heatware. I know there was a batch of cards that have a bug where the screen glitches during some web browsing. Some people on reddit have done multiple RMAs but I think they just keep getting each other's cards back. Seems that when they get a newer card their problem is resolved. (I theorize the companies are testing the cards and they pass inspection because the testing process probably does not catch intermittent issues during web browsing.)

2 Display port monitors and 1 DVI but I can use HDMI

Fury X has 3 DP and 1 HDMI port.

Sell your last 290 when the aftermarket RX 480 OC's are out.. It will cost far less than a Fury X and outperform it. Get 2 if you know the games you play support CFX.

Currently though the performance of the 290 is almost identical to the 480, I would only be lowering my power usage but it would cost me about 80 bucks for a side grade. If the 480 had come out with better power usage I would hold out to see what AIB's do when they crank the voltage a bit, but it seems like we are seeing the approximate limit of that GPU for now.

I am coming from Crossfire 290s originally. I sold one 290 before the 480 release to avoid eating the entire devaluation of the cards. I would like to get back to a single card solution. Crossfire/SLI are great when it works, but.. it is about 50/50 if the game I play supports it and while I think that at least some developers are going to embrace DX12's multi-adapter. I prefer to take a wait and see approach.

Also my motherboard places the two PCIE slots pretty close together so the primary card ends up hot if you are not using a blower.
