FUTURE Computer Upgrades

I've been waiting and waiting for something new to come out in order to build a new PC for a couple of years now. The last thing I was considering getting was an Athlon64 system with PCI-E in the beginning of this year, but for some stupid reason I decided against jumping on the A64 Socket 939 bandwagon. Instead I made several upgrades to my current system - namely, one more GB of RAM, a 6600GT, and a new motherboard (my last one was crap). So right now it would be a bad idea for me to invest in a totally new platform like Skt 939 or Skt T where I would need a new video card, new RAM (I would want 2x1 GB sticks instead o 4x512 MB), motherboard, CPU, etc., since I just spent over $250 for upgrades on this one. (just realized I spent that much as I was writing this thread )
So my question is, what new platforms will AMD and Intel have at the end of this year and the beginning of next? I couldn't find any roadmaps that go into 2006. What will be the next gaming platform that's better than A64 + Skt 939?

AMD is moving to a different socket than 939, with possible on die PCI-E controller (like their memory controller now).

That seems like the next "big" thing to wait for. I would just recommend holding off as long as you can, and then buying.

Most of the time. When the 9700 Pro came out, there was no next big thing for a good 3 years.

yeah, there will always be a next big thing, but there are good times to wait and bad times to wait.
right now i dont know if it's a bad time to wait for the next gaming platform, or just buy a A64 + socket 939.

r520, and intel's yonah and merom cores are told to be a killer, but i'd still say they are going to be crap, but 65nanometer...aww hell i never really care about whats up ahead.

i'll definately be going with GF 7-series or ATi R520, but any idea when the new Intel's and the new AMD that varun mentioned be out?

Probably first quarter 2006 for socket M2.

M2 is for DDR2. I really don't care for that.

However I will be wondering if and when AMD's CPU's take advantage of DDR2 which very few of us here wil lever know about until a month before they arrive.

i did some googling and im unclear as to whether Intel "Yona" is for desktops or laptops? i found merom was for laptops.
plus, all websites seem to say that socket M2 will be out in 2H 2006, not first quarter .

If I were to upgrade now, I would get a DFI PCI-Express SLI set up. Just because it's the best out right now. Any other PCI-Express motherboard from ASUS, MSI, Soltek, Gigabyte, etc... are good. Just stick to major vendors. If you need 10 USB 2.0 ports, extra firewire ports, the latest and greatest integrated RAID cards, and dual gigabyte lan than you would get the most expensive obviously.

Now that dual core is out, I don't think there's any 'next big thing' until 2007.

However, 2007 is only a little over a year away, plus AMD's virtualization test might be a big deal.
