future in displays?

Well, there is a new LCD technology out (or will be soon) called FFD, which lowers response times to <10ms and doubles or triples brightness. Other then that, look out for a company called Digital Inc. Right now they have technology that Walmart is using for giant signs. Basically, it allows Walmart to create a sign and then display it on these 1" thick panels. They are only black / white right now, but they are working on color. Once color comes through, they will most definately be the future of displays. No eye strain because they aren't a light source, incredible clarity, etc..

The way they work, btw is imagine a bunch of tiny bins (each one is the size of a pixel) full of black positively charged molecules (i don't know what they use) when you apply a negative charge behind the bin, the molecules all go to the front and that pixel appears as a black dot. Color would work the same, except each pixel is three bins, each one full of complimentary colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, I believe).

I'll go in the opposite direction most think for new displays (bigger)

What we really need, especially now that the video cards are exceeding double what is needed to play current games at optimal framerates, is a pair of screens integrated into a pair of sunglasses for true stereovision (3D). With the rapid increases in LCD/plasma technology lately this just might be possible. Plasma would by far be preferred because slow LCD response times could ruin the 3D effect in action games.

There are single-screen + shutter glasses solutions for this, such as
wicked3d, but this has many other limitations, such as needing a screen with a fast pixel response/fade time (normally considered a bad thing because it will appear to flicker unless you have really high refresh), and always needing to look right at the screen.

Ideally, the screens themselves could be hemispheres, rather than flat panel, allowing the effect to work even when you look to the side.
