I've canceled the cards and she's in the process of locking her credit files.

given how many times you have to use your SSN for bank and credit card inquiries, plus the amount of data theft that actually occurs without public knowledge at most banks, it would probably be safe to assume that your SSN is out there already. I do agree however, that one shouldn't make a habit of carrying their SSN card in their wallet.

if you assume for any population that X percent of people will have their pocket picked, there's a chance one of those people will be you, and if you have your SS card you will be more at risk for a serious ID theft fuck up than the guy who isn't carrying his SS# around

just because you don't get your pocket picked doesn't mean you're not taking an extra risk by carrying it around

Would you carry around $1000+ cash in your wallet at all times? It's an unnecessary risk that most reasonable people would avoid. Yet losing your SSN card could be much, much worse (If I had a choice between losing my SSN card or $1000, I'd part with the money in a heartbeat).

I carry my SSC with me everywhere I go. However, it sits in my single-credit-card-sized wallet in an external zipped up breast pocket.

You can pry my SSC from my cold dead fingers if I don't kill you first.
