From what I know about smog legality here in CA, if you install an engine from OBD2 car into a car that doesn't have it, you need to transfer the entire OBD2 system.

Basically the engine (including emissions system) needs to function exactly as it did in the original car which includes the OBD2 system. You must run the stock ECU. Good luck with that.

It was much easier in the pre-OBD2 days since car electronics weren't nearly as integrated. The engine swap I did in my early 90's Accord was plug-and-play and the guy I sold it to had no trouble getting BAR sticker for the swap.

EDIT: And in Cali your car gets sniffed and visual inspection no matter what. And don't forget we have dynos for smog checks as well. The only way to avoid the rollers is by having an AWD car.

Well you can't run a 1MZ on a 5SFE computer or harness... you HAVE to use the correct ECU for the engine.

An engine swap nearly always includes the complete electrical harness and computer and sensors, so it retains OBD2 and all original function.

Many people will swap and use a Megasquirt or some other aftermarket ECU thereby eliminating any OBD2 compatibility.

Also, to keep it legal you can't swap an non-OBD2 engine into an OBD2 chassis. This what I was getting at earlier. To swap the OBD2 engine into the mk2 and keep it legal, the car would have to rewired for the proper ECU and OBD2 functionality.

But, none of this matters since the OP isn't in CA.

Honestly you can do whatever you want. As long as the car has an "OBD2 port" and tells their computer "PASS" and that's all that matters.

You can flash a special emissions tune and swap out your exhaust with a catted one once every two years to pass visual and sniffer.

Either way, it's one of many reasons CA sucks the fat one.

So as of today I am the owner of a new home! I now have a decently sized garage. Its 24' x 26'. Already has a work bench built in. Two automatic doors. Fully insulated (R40 in the ceiling, woot!) and has a 110,000 btu furnace LOL. FYI a 70,000 BTU will heat an average sized home with ease, so this beast will warm up my garage from 0*F to 72*F in 10 minutes, BOOYA!
Also, I will have a large concrete pad behind the garage where two cars can be parked, as well as a 'grassy knoll' just to the side where I could park a parts car. In other words, I have all, if not more, than all the space I should need.
As for the house - its also more than I need, but I think it will be a good investment property in the long run.
Possession date is on December 14th. I should be able to be moved in and working on cars within a month.
Ive been jonesing... JONESING!!!

heh heh, yeaaaaa, the shipping from here to NH would cost you an arm, leg and your left nut. Probably not worth it for only 3 out of four rims. the front right is way buggered.
I'd like to do a 5 bolt conversion to my MK1. Just gotta find the How To guide. then I could use these - or at least have a lot more options for rims. 4 bolt pattern seems hard to find.

So as of today I am the owner of a new home!

Congratulations! That's one of the reasons why I have purchasing a home as one of my short term goals... I simply can't do any fun "projects" right now. Hell, I can't even change my oil right now. :|

HELLZ YEAH

I just got a couple of new rolling trays so I can organize per project and it helped a ton. You can never have too many. I use one for detail work and roll it around as needed.

Dude you need to make a cost list of everything you bought for this project, including the house, just to get the title of most expensive Mk1.5 ever.

Oh bother.
Im sure I could easily be beat by some MR2OC guys if they'd include the cost of their shops!

Between packing up the things in my house, work, and a new girlfriend I havent had much time to do things for the MR2, but I did find a few hours to buy parts and research.
I have purchased nearly everything I can until I start to work on the project and get exact measurements for hoses, piping and wiring. Here is my parts list and install procedure pages so far.

here is most of my 'printed' research. I also have TONNES of websites saved as favorites on my computers.

Next week thursday is possession day. As requested by Manimal, I will post before and after photos of the Garage. May take me a while to get settled in though.

And BTW, having a designated Car Research Binder with all the papers I need is SUPER handy. I wish Id done it for the '85

So,
Im all moved in now. Still have a few things to bring over for the garage though. Anyhoo, here are some photo of the new mancave before I started moving things in.

Nice work bench area with built in light. very nice. Its also wired for 240volts so I may get an old oven for powdercoating.

Today I brought home the Silver MR2 and got it running again. These cars are fun on ice! Extremely hard to make go straight (felt like my rear end was constantly swaying, even in low revs), but fun around corners!

Word of advice take the time to properly set up and organize your shop before you work on anything! if you dont its unlikely and take you 4 times longer if your try and do it after you have buried yourself in a project and other garage tools or projects. ive learned this from experence. that and things are easier to find when organized

good point brosef. Ive been pondering tearing down the drywall and putting up some pegboard with shelving.
I also need a tool cabinet.

is it gonna be work and car storage or just project garage? if a project garage use one of the bays and set up a workspace. give you a nice space to work on stuff and gives you a wide birth to work on the car! and keeps everything in one spot instead of around be surprised how much space that takes up. i should take pictures of my shop when i spend the 2-3 days reorganizing it cause it doesnt flow well at all and is killing my space. hence the advice i dont wanna see you go though what im about to!

Leave the drywall up! No need to go through all that hassle if you get something like this.

I would highly recommended standing shelves or cabinets, not something that is fixed to the wall. It will make life suck a lot less.

THis also is true. Then I can bring my shelving with me if I ever decide to move agian.
The problem with the current drywall is that the previous owner has put up shelves and poked holes straight throught the plastic and into the insulation. I just hope this wont cause problems with humidity/mold/ etc.
If I were to put up pegboard I would first teat off all the drywall, redo the plastic, then nail up cheap plywood. On top of the plywood I would put 1x4's, THEN nail the pegboard to that. Would be cheap and effective. But really, I think I have LOTS of shelving in there, and will just use what the previous owner had. Its four times as much shelving as Ive ever had and should be lots.

I did not realize that the drywall and plastic were already damaged. Definitely worth fixing if you're going to hang on to the house for a while.

Yesterday officially marks the first day of the MK1.5 poject.
I borrowed my brother-in-laws truck and car hauler to get one of the MR2's to my house.
I apologize for the washed out phone photos again... I cant find my camera after the move.

It just barely clears as I loaded and unloaded.

This is the easy move, I dont know how I am going to move the MkII to my place due to all the damage.

First things first, I drained all the fluids, and started taking apart the car. I removed a few parts that Ill keep for the silver MR2 (one that I really needed was a Thermotime switch- its a switch that controls the Cold Start Injector (basically a Choke) by measuring how cold the coolant is in the engine. When the engine is cold the thermotime switch will activate the cold start injector to assist with starting the engine. The silver MR2's thermotime was broken causing the engine to hard start (like 8-10 turns ). Now I turn the key, the engine turns once and BAM! fires right up).

I spent a good half hour in my empty garage the other day debating what to do about shelving. In the end I decided, its pretty good the way it is. Ill just leave it all and use it. The holes in the plastic is not a great thing, I dont like it, but Ill live with it.
And on a side note, I had it so warm in my garage that this confused little guy woke up and was flying around lol!
