I can't tell you why but every time I read your screen name and see that pic if the cat it brings a smile to my face. It would be cool to see a video or two of your cat in action. Keep doing what your doing Fuzzy. I really enjoy the updates.

Not to derail, but tineye shows that is a generic cat, not his cat.

Ill start the "Pets in Your Car" thread when I finish this one lol!

OK update time!
A lot but not a lot has happened. I have put many hours in but with few results to show you. Some of the bolts on this car don’t come off unless you cuss at least 20 times in a row and hold your tongue out the correct side while wrenching. There were two up front that had to have the triple attack - PB blaster/Heat/Impact - even then they each took more than an hour to get off. Very frustrating and disheartening.

OK Photo time!
As promised here is the completed Front trunk with carpet, plastics, tire and battery tray installed!

There is just barely enough room for the tray and tire to fit

My new brake callipers, brackets and rotors came in as well. They are for the 87-89 model MR2’s and are slightly larger than the stock 85-86. I also bought some paint for the callipers - I know, I know - ricer.

Can see the size difference in rotors

Front end suspension and steering rack are now completely disassembled

Ready for sanding and paint

Just a shot of the front left wheel well as a Before Pic

And some other big news! My electrician buddy came around and hooked up an oven for me! This will be for next winters project - rebuilding the 3SGTE with powder coated parts - ooooh yeaaaaaaa! In the mean time it will assist with drying of parts that I wash.

Ouch, never seen a bushing tear up a puller like that. Metal outer shell fused to control arm?

yea, the rubber was just rock hard. and the brass bushing was fused. Was a cheap puller. Scared the crap out of me when I heard "CRACK!" and things starting flying in every direction.
Wear safety glasses at all times. You never know when metal shards could go flying.

It would be awesome to attend that picnic. It would be even more awesome if I could bring the MK1.5
Both situations are doubtful =( Especially bringing the MK1.5 BUT who knows what the future holds! Who knows when Ill finally get this thing running.

I have been fairly busy this past month and not with the MK1.5. That combined with a general lack of motivation for a while has led to one months time passing with very little progress.
But Im back at it.

All suspension is now POR15’ed and ready to be put back on the car. The front suspension I already re-installed.

Here is a shot of the front left after installation and with the rotor and calliper just loosely sitting in place.

All the floorboards are now welded in and rubber coated. Here is a couple shots of the passenger side.

Then the other day I ran out to where the MK2 heart donor is located and stripped it down of most of the unnecessary parts. I was planning on shipping it to my house today but something came up and has prevented that from happening. Also it is quite muddy out, so maybe Ill wait another week. I really really want to get it to my house because I think it would be a major motivation boost just to have it close by.

How it started

2.5 hours later

That’s all I got for now. Hopefully the next update will be “engine out of MK2!” Then the real fun begins.

hardtop car!? damn....that was a light turbo to start with. nice to see progress!

ya, its a shame to see this thing all torn up. I sold one of the rear windows for $75. 33% of the cost of the car recouped with one part out =D

Today I am annoyed. I have afternoon off from work (first time in a long time) and was going to try and get the brakes installed. Bad news bear though, as things don’t quite line up.

According to the MR2 owners club website, the brake callipers/brackets and rotors from an 1987-1989 MR2 will bolt straight onto an 1985-1986 MR2. This is desirable because they are larger and have less front bias.
BUT much to my dismay, mine do NOT bolt right on.

The bracket fits perfectly without the rotor in place

But with the rotor on the hub, the bracket rubs against the edge of the rotor, and I can only put one bolt in.

GURRRRR!!! ROAR!!! CUSS CUSS.

The rotors are in spec, exactly 257 and 262mm. I also called my NAPA guy and made him double check that the brackets/callipers he bought are for an 87-89 MR2. And yup they are

NUGEN 2201519L and 2201519R from Altrom.

Today I am annoyed.

are you sure the rotor was fully in place? also sometimes u might have to file off some of the bracket just to get the correct parts to fit together....

ya, i hammered the rotor into place with my rubber mallet. I considered grinding but there really isnt a lot of material to grind away. Wouldn't that also weaken the design of the bracket? Seems sketchy to mess around with something as vital as brakes. I told my NAPA guy whats going on and he's also looking into it. It may have something to do with Canadian vs. American cars as well.

I wouldn't want to grind bits off of brake parts. It sounds like you need different brackets, maybe you can buy just the brackets without calipers?

So it looks like I may have been shipped some mislabeled brakes. My NAPA guy is bringing in a new caliper/bracket to compare. But from diagrams it looks as if I have been given the 1985-86 bracket/calliper.

I saw your thread on MR2OC...that would explain it for sure.

ok. I have a conclusion for the brake calliper bracket issue.

After looking at many diagrams, and photos, and phone calls made to suppliers, my NAPA guy and I have come to the conclusion that the 87-89 Brake Calliper Brackets are UNAVAILABLE in Canada.
Effing Canada.

We brought in another calliper/bracket to compare and we received exactly they same thing, with exactly the same problem.

The photos ahead are curtousy of padandwheels.com

The distance between holes on the 87-89 bracket should be 33.5mm
The distance between the holes on the brackets I have been recieving are 25mm :: confirming that the remanufacturer is placing MK1a brake brackets onto MK1b brake callipers. which is retarded.

After figuring this all out my NAPA guy placed a few phone calls, and day later we now know that the 87-89 brackets are unavailable in canadia.

SO! I am now in search of somebody parting out an 87-89 MK1 MR2 so that I can buy their brackets!!
