Yaotl, many of us don't have mesquite trees in our yards. I don't think steak cooked over pine would taste all that good.

<3 for the tao

and yeah, i know, but i'm from texas and i miss that too.

I have a big bag of hickory chunks ... throw a few of those on top of the coals just before you put the food on

I'm building a permanent Outdoor Kitchen with a Natural Gas Grill. I'll have to post some pics sometime. The thing is huge!

ALL I WANT IS A NICE GRILL THAT'S NOT GAS, IS THAT TOO HARD TO ASK!?! *rant*

I'll probably end up purchasing this since the price is right. What do you think? ATK/CI gave it a thumbs up in their 2002 charcoal grill review

here you bitch but i bet you dump that kingsford crap in the grill

I use both.
If its just a quick evening-after-work dinner for the family gas does just fine.
If its a lazy afternoon and I have extra time to wait for those coals to get nice and toasty sure as hell gonna use charcoal.

Weber makes tons of charcoal grills. Im not sure why you cant find one... they are damn near everywhere.

Just get the webber kettle.
I've found that it's much easier to have gas/electric and a smoker box full of mesquite chips.

Does the brand of charcoal you use affect the taste of the food? if so, which brand is the best?

if the charcoal doesn't look like it used to be a piece of wood then it is not the best.

oak, hickory, mesquite

Alder!!!!

But, I prefer to just add, to the charcoal, a small handful of wood that I soaked in water first.

I charcoal grill all winter long.

Here is the Weber that I have. Since it's 8+ yrs old it may look a little different but there isn't a bit of rust on it, and it stays outside under my deck. Yeah I'd buy another one if I had to replace it.

What's the problem with using Kingsford?

Plain jane kingsford charcoal is processed charcoal, bound into the pretty little briquette shape with stuff like cornstarch and various artificial binders. Kingsford burns cooler and slower than natural chunk charcoal, which makes it inferior for high heat grilling and searing.
However, when you are building a slow burning fire for something like barbeque, briquette's slower and cooler burning become an advantage. In this situation, it is best to use an all-natural briquette that isn't pumped full of artificial crap.

meh, Weber grills are tiny and lacking feature-wise, and just don't have that price/performance bang unless you get one of their ranch kettles, but at over $1000, I'd rather not.

Charcoal!?!?!?!?! Charcoal is for sissies!
What you need is a large pit with a nice firebox on the end of it, and a cord of dry Mesquite wood so you can make some real BBQ!

"...just don't have that price/performance bang..."

You got money you don't know what to do with? The Weber kettle is about $60.00. I'd call that good bang for the buck. Need more grill area? Supplement it with a Smokey Joe.. Perfect for just a few hot dogs or chops. Ya throw some charcoal in, light it, cook on it, and put it away. WTF else do you need it to do?
