only thing i like about gas is it only takes 2-3 minutes to get hot....

gas is fine... charcoal just takes too long to heat up and cool down.. when i need food i dont want to have to wait 15 minutes before i start to cook.. i want to be able to turn on grill... pat out hamburger patty... and by the time i'm patted out be able to throw it on

I would go with a weber grill. The links are posted here, and I'm guessing you can use google.

I have a weber smoker that's lasted forever, and works wonders. Many family and friends have their gas grills as well.

that must be one hell of a gril to get to temp in 2-3 minutes. what you got in there a freakin' array of 10 acetaline torches?

you need about 10 minutes to get up to temp to sear.

You got money you don't know what to do with? The Weber kettle is about $60.00. I'd call that good bang for the buck. Need more grill area? Supplement it with a Smokey Joe.. Perfect for just a few hot dogs or chops. Ya throw some charcoal in, light it, cook on it, and put it away. WTF else do you need it to do?
You've never had a party with grilled food? aka a cookout/bbq/whatever?
never grilled a whole turkey?
never fed more than 3 people?
never grilled side dishes along with your main dish?
never grilled food for leftovers?

Hot dogs are nothing but noob grilling fodder, IMO at least. I do enjoy some of those more exotic hot dogs, or sausages as they are usually called. mmmm now I want to go visit Top Dog up north..

Besides, how the hell am I going to fit a whole leg of lamb + sides on one of those lil' grills?

oh yeah thanks for reminding me on one of my favorite charcoal points.

Gas will never burn as hot as charcoal. Searing with charcoal > searing with gas

I use charcoal with mesquite in it, it works rather well.

Gas does not cost as much as charcoal does and there is no worry about where to store the charcoal and/or lighter fluid/newspaper lighting tool
Gas is more convenient when I want to grill a hotdog or a bratwurst than lighting up charcoal and waiting 20 mins for it to get hot.

People cook for a reason, to eat and eat good food. Char-broiled food just tastes better.

I don't think so for small time grillers, besides that is the only type of coals that I have ever used in my Weber. I do have a gas grill also. But my Weber is the best yet and it will outlast my gas gril by far. I've come up with some pretty good ways on how to grill my Weber (i.e. drunk chicken, ribs, hamburgers, hotdogs, fish, shrimp, onion, etc.). Besides a grill is nothing without the cook and/or techniques used on how to keep everything done just right.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to spend around $10K on a grill, I've seen some around where I live, when I can put that towards something else.

with this one can you use both propane and charcoal..or is the propane just to start the fire up.....how does it work

Propane just starts up the fire. It's merely a convenience issue, for those who still love the taste of wood/charcoal.

Awesome BBQ from Lowes.

Great stuff. Cast iron grids. Possible to smoke and bbq. There is even a an add-on smoker if you want.
I've used it twice now and made the best T-bones in my life.
:thumbsup::beer:
We had that grill back when I was in High School.

Make sure you cover it up well. I mean really well.

I have gas plumming, a gas ready grill, and guess what...... It's sat in my storage shed for over 2 years. It's all in the taste! When I was in a hurry, the gas was the way to go. Now, Kingsford charcoal is the only way to go.

You can't hurry a good thing. The coals are not ready until they're ready! Get it? If you charcoal cook meat, don't be like my buddy gear-head. He lights it, then drinks a quick beer, then meat and flames are on. George, you might have well just drank the lighter fluid, chewed some leather, then gone onto your useless life of watching Jeaopardy. Oh, my friend, when will you get a life?

Let them damn coals work a bit, ash down to white, while you nibble on sweet mary's ears, legs, or just sip your....beer?

Some people, just should not BBQ, or nibble on "sweet mary". It's a pity, but some people are not qualified......... :Q

so my 800 degress isn't enough to sear?

That's the air temp, the surface is well over 1000

Charcoal burns at about 2012 degrees Fahrenheit, 1100 degrees Centigrade. A sear on a gas burner just can't compare to a sear on a rippin' hot charcoal bed.

IMO, a good gas grill gets PLENTY hot to sear, carmelize meat and fatty tissues, and added that you can control the heat so much better, gas is safer (if you have rugrats running around), and gas is easier to work with regardless of hte weather. I cut my teeth on charcoal, but now choose to grill with gas.

Note: a good gas grill will have at least 3 burners, at least 35,000 BTUs, and sturdy / thick walled construction.

Charcoal rules if you want to spend less than $250 on the grill, don't care about kids or drunks knocking the damn thing over, and are skilled in the art of fire.

LOL, why would I WANT to cook something and leave it raw on the inside?

but seriously, my guess is that could be done on my Kenmore. IF needed I could add extra BTUs with a blow torch, but it doesn't take that much heat to sear something that thick so fast that you leave the inside of the food cool.
