nwfusion.

seriously, I don't believe you've ever cooked on a nice gas grill.

everyone of my 20 or so friends thought the same way. Then I would bring them over and cook some steak, corn and potatoes on my grill.

Every single one of them, and I mean every one went ought and bought a premium gas grill (the 4-5 burner kind, cast iron/porcelin grates, etc)

no flare ups, just a little flame licking the meat, no ash on food, no lighter fluid taste.

i've got a gas grill, charcoal and a smoker. Use them all. But for steak the gas grill simply cannot be beat.

not really. 1) the oven is INSIDE your house 2) your oven shuts on and off....3) heat is NOT as hot, ovens usually have less than 20,000 BTUs; Gas grills usually have more than 20,000 BTUs with good ones with 35,000+ BTUs.

But you can broil a good steak in an oven, which will 1) constantly apply heat to the food (assuming you prop open the oven door) 2) get the meat as close to the flame as possible, maximizing the oven's BTUs.

I'll probably end up purchasing this since the price is right. What do you think? ATK/CI gave it a thumbs up in their 2002 charcoal grill review

You are in luck my man. I just got myself an awesome unit.
Awesome BBQ from Lowes.

Great stuff. Cast iron grids. Possible to smoke and bbq. There is even a an add-on smoker if you want.
I've used it twice now and made the best T-bones in my life.

I saw that one a few weeks ago, and was tempted!

Do it!
This is my third season with one, and it's great!

Do you have problems with maintenance? Mine gets the occational rain on it as of now but I think it will be OK since it's treated. The cast iron grates > * . They just needs to be prepared once.
This is how:

When new, leave in oven att ~200F for an hour.
Apply veg oil and broil at ~300F for 2 hours.
Apply more oil and broil at ~200F for another hour.

Talk about 'non-stick' It's great.

I've had a Big Green Egg for over 7 years and use natural lump charcoal. I can get it over 800F sounding like a jet engine for grilling or go for over 24 hours at 225F on 5lbs of charcoal without having to adjust it for smoking a pork shoulder. Works just as well in winter blizzard conditions. If I want to use gas I just use a regular stove and oven with a cast iron pan.

Agreed. Tuna should only be served rare or raw.

BTW, how come no one has touched on lighter fluid? Is it just assumed that none here uses it b/c I would say that Charcoal when used w/ lighter fluid is significantly worse than gas, imparting a chemical taste and smell. The only way to properly cook with charcoal is to use a chimney.

You = weak.
I Tim Allen'ed my oven. The addition of an oxygen feed system combined with high pressure gas system has really cranked up my oven heat.
Although, I did warp the door and have to redo that, its been great!

I have both Charcoal and Gas. When I'm in a hurry and lazy I'll use the gas grill. When I want it done right I'll use the Old Faithful Weber.

You know you walked into this, but....

GAS owns charcoal for day to day grilling.

Gas gets hot faster and cools down faster when done

Gas does not cost as much as charcoal does and there is no worry about where to store the charcoal and/or lighter fluid/newspaper lighting tool

Gas is more convenient when I want to grill a hotdog or a bratwurst than lighting up charcoal and waiting 20 mins for it to get hot.

exactly! fvck charcoal, its a stupid waste of time. I love my weber gas grill, its soo easy, piping hot in 5 minutes and cool in another 5.

"The only way to properly cook with charcoal is to use a chimney."

Those are OK, but I start my charcoal pile with a propane torch. Been doing it that way for decades, so it would be hard to switch to another method now.

My gas grill rotted away from lack of use. I figured it would be good for winter grilling, but i still use charcoal for that. Tastes better, and that's what counts. Hell, I might as well cook on the kitchen broiler, as use a gas grill. WTF is the point of it anyway?

My brother-in-law does that. he has one of the small handhelt propane torch's he uses to light the charcoal. It only takes him a few minutes to get it going. I thought about buying one myself for it heh.

I don't think so. Can't beat that flavor it gives to what ever you may be grilling.

ive used both plenty of times and i am convinced that its all mental. in fact if I cooked you up a couple of brats or hamburgers i bet you couldnt tell which one came from charcoal and which one came from propane or natural gas.

I don't mind the time it takes to get the charcoal to fire up. I usually just sit down and have a beer. by the time my beer is doen the charcoal is going good. My wife then brings out the food and i cook it. We have a great system set up!

That's because you don't smoke them. That's what Weber kettles and their "Smokey Joe" are all about. Next time, try to RTFM!

only thing i like about gas is it only takes 2-3 minutes to get hot....

gas is fine... charcoal just takes too long to heat up and cool down.. when i need food i dont want to have to wait 15 minutes before i start to cook.. i want to be able to turn on grill... pat out hamburger patty... and by the time i'm patted out be able to throw it on

that must be one hell of a gril to get to temp in 2-3 minutes. what you got in there a freakin' array of 10 acetaline torches?

you need about 10 minutes to get up to temp to sear.
oh yeah thanks for reminding me on one of my favorite charcoal points.

Gas will never burn as hot as charcoal. Searing with charcoal > searing with gas

so my 800 degress isn't enough to sear?

That's the air temp, the surface is well over 1000
Charcoal burns at about 2012 degrees Fahrenheit, 1100 degrees Centigrade. A sear on a gas burner just can't compare to a sear on a rippin' hot charcoal bed.

IMO, a good gas grill gets PLENTY hot to sear, carmelize meat and fatty tissues, and added that you can control the heat so much better, gas is safer (if you have rugrats running around), and gas is easier to work with regardless of hte weather. I cut my teeth on charcoal, but now choose to grill with gas.

Note: a good gas grill will have at least 3 burners, at least 35,000 BTUs, and sturdy / thick walled construction.

Charcoal rules if you want to spend less than $250 on the grill, don't care about kids or drunks knocking the damn thing over, and are skilled in the art of fire.
let me know when you can do this with gas.

LOL, why would I WANT to cook something and leave it raw on the inside?

but seriously, my guess is that could be done on my Kenmore. IF needed I could add extra BTUs with a blow torch, but it doesn't take that much heat to sear something that thick so fast that you leave the inside of the food cool.

Dude, you don't cook tuna often do you? That is how you cook tuna steaks.

Another vote for a webber kettle and a chimney.

Yeah you may be able to get similar results with a $1000 gas grill, but for $100 the webber/chimney combo will give you great taste and since you are renting, will be way easier to move.

I don't buy the "saves time" agrument. While charcoal may take longer, it does not take any more of my time. Put newspaper under chimney, put charcoal in chimney, light newspaper, go do whatever for 15 minutes or so, dump charcoal out and cook. Actual time spent on charcoal? About 1 minute. If you are too lazy to do that, then god help america.

I absolutely refuse to believe a "blind taste test" had gas beating charcoal. Link please.

I use that "kinsgsford crap" and am happy with it. Where do you gourmet charcoal folks get your stuff? Hey, did you know that kingsford charcoal originally was invented when Ford motor co was trying to find some use for the waste wood generated when making model T's? So yeah cooking on industrial waste, may not be the best thing, It would be cool to try something new but all I've found around here are some mesquite briquets that made my meat taste bad.

While I love steak on the webber I have to say indirect cooking of roasts and fowl is it's forte. Ever cook a goose on a gas grill? That's a honest question I have no idea if you can do indirect cooking of fatty fowl on a gas grill. In the webber it's a snap and comes out tasting great. Goose, turkey, roasts you name it. Some of the best meat I have ever tasted in my life rolled off my webber. I am consistently surprised with the results I get off that little $60 wonder.

Yep the cast iron grates are great!

I have a cover for it (I bought the grill and cover from the company website before Lowes started carrying them)

I usually cover it, but there have been many times when it rained before fully cooking or was just plain too lazy.

Seems to be holding up well
